The popular city-building game Cities: Skylines is getting a new development team. Publisher Paradox Interactive and long-time developer Colossal Order have agreed to part ways, according to an announcement made on Monday.
Colossal Order, the team behind the Cities: Skylines series, announced on their official forums that they are starting work on new projects and looking for fresh creative challenges.
Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen shared that the Cities series and their collaboration with Paradox have been central to the company’s success for more than fifteen years. They originally started Cities in Motion without expecting it to become the beloved and popular franchise it is today, with a dedicated community of millions of players worldwide.
We believe the franchise will remain successful with Paradox in charge. We’re now focusing our energy and skills on developing new projects that fit our future goals, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.
Meet Cities: Skylines New Developer
Iceflake Studios, a team within Paradox Interactive, will now be fully responsible for the Cities: Skylines II franchise. They’ll handle everything – from free updates to the current game and ongoing work on the Editor and console versions, to all future expansions and downloadable content. This ensures Cities: Skylines II players can expect continued support and new content for years to come.
Colossal Order will finish up a few remaining updates – including bug fixes, improvements to bike paths, new buildings for Old Town, and a test version of asset support for the editor – before handing over full development to Iceflake at the beginning of 2026.
Lasse Liljedahl, studio manager at Iceflake, expressed his excitement and sense of duty about leading the Cities franchise. He acknowledged the dedicated fanbase and promised to honor the game’s history while working alongside the community to build its future.
Iceflake is ready to begin development, building on ten years of experience creating city-building and management games. We believe the game has a solid base and huge potential, and we’re excited to share our plans for its future.
The announcement didn’t include any news about the console version of Cities: Skylines 2. Its release has been delayed several times, and we still don’t know when it will be available.
TopMob has reached out to ask what this change means for the console version.
