PS1 Games That Deserve The FF7 Remake Treatment

Released in 1997 for the PlayStation, Final Fantasy 7 quickly became one of the most popular games on the console. Its enduring popularity with fans led Square Enix to create a whole universe of Final Fantasy 7 content, including sequels, prequels, films, novels, and other related projects.

The most ambitious project in this series so far has been the remake of Final Fantasy 7, beginning with the 2020 release. These remakes aren’t just updates of the original game; they’re expanding the story significantly, and are planned as a trilogy. This raises the question: which other classic PlayStation 1 games deserve a similar, large-scale remake with a generous budget?

Final Fantasy 9

More Than Rumors

For some time, people have been speculating that Final Fantasy 9 might be the next game in the series to be remade. Current thinking suggests this would be a single, complete remake, rather than a multi-part project. While fans would be happy with FF9 being remade at all, a more expansive version could be really exciting for the future of the series.

This game was originally designed as a tribute to the classic Final Fantasy titles from 2000. A remake could really expand the worlds of Alexandria and Lindblum, making them even more immersive. Plus, the original Final Fantasy 9 was already a substantial adventure spread across four discs, giving developers a lot of content to work with when creating a remake.

Metal Gear Solid

Shadow Moses As A Bigger Island

The original Metal Gear Solid was updated for the GameCube, but that version hasn’t been made available again. While it featured improved cutscenes, the gameplay itself wasn’t significantly expanded, and it’s been over two decades since its launch. A new update is long overdue.

The game is set on Shadow Moses Island, and at the start, Solid Snake infiltrates the base undetected. If the remake keeps this opening, the base could be expanded. However, it would be even more exciting if players could freely explore the entire island, which has several different facilities. It would be a shame if Hideo Kojima wasn’t involved, but Konami has many other skilled developers who could successfully create the remake.

Mega Man Legends

Island Hopping

Instead of a brand new game, fans would be thrilled to see a remake of the original Mega Man Legends. The story begins with Mega Man and his team crash-landing on Kattlelox Island, and the entire adventure unfolds there.

A new version of the game could feature a larger island to explore, both on the surface and underground. It could also change the story so the main island doesn’t appear until later, starting with the team exploring smaller islands, similar to what happened in the game’s sequel. Adding controls for an airship would be a fantastic new feature for Mega Man Legends.

Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night

Remaking THE Metroidvania

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a hugely influential game that helped define the Metroidvania genre. It built upon the foundation laid by Super Metroid, adding elements commonly found in role-playing games. Many fans consider it a highlight of the Castlevania series, in part because you play as the character Alucard.

Despite a few tries, 3D Castlevania games haven’t captured the magic of the original 2D titles. A remake could revitalize the series by blending classic gameplay with fresh ideas – perhaps expanding the world beyond the castle or letting players explore more of Trevor Belmont’s story from the beginning. It’s been a long time since a new Castlevania game, so why not bring back the most beloved entry to kickstart a revival?

Dino Crisis

Moving Past Evil

Capcom fans have wanted a remake of Dino Crisis ever since the company began successfully remaking the Resident Evil series. While a new Dino Crisis game would be great, revisiting the original with a remake could be a fantastic starting point.

The game’s basic idea is similar to Jurassic Park, but with a greater focus on horror. Players take on the role of specialists sent to a remote island to discover why all communication has stopped, and they find the island overrun by dinosaurs. Currently, the game takes place inside a contained research facility, but a remake could broaden the setting to include more outdoor areas and a larger number of dinosaur types.

Parasite Eve

The Streets Of NYC

Parasite Eve is considered one of the best horror games on the original PlayStation, largely because it blended the horror genre with RPG elements in a truly innovative way, and it remains distinctive even today. The game is set in New York City, and players can quickly travel between different areas while investigating a strange case involving people dissolving into a slimy substance and animals undergoing bizarre mutations.

The various locations in the game, like the opera house, hospital, and police station, felt a bit small and could be expanded with more detail in a future version. It would also greatly improve the experience if players could actually drive their cars between these places, making the city feel more connected and realistic.

Xenogears

A Second Chance

Xenogears was an ambitious PlayStation game that ended up being scaled back during development. The second disc, in particular, had to be shortened, resulting in more cutscenes and conversations and less actual gameplay. Many fans believe this game is long overdue for a remake.

The team behind the classic game Xenogears at Squaresoft eventually created their own company, Monolith Soft, and went on to develop Xenosaga and Xenoblade Chronicles. It would be fantastic if Square Enix, Monolith Soft, and Nintendo teamed up to release an exclusive remake on the Switch 2.

The Legend Of Dragoon

Adding A Real World

Like Parasite Eve, The Legend of Dragoon limited world map travel to specific destinations, preventing players from exploring freely. This was unusual for turn-based RPGs of that era, such as Final Fantasy 9, which typically allowed more open exploration. A remake could improve this by adding more opportunities to explore the world between towns and dungeons.

Dragons were important to the story, but players didn’t get to interact with them as much as they wanted. A remake could change that, letting players fight alongside dragons or even ride them to explore the game world.
