Alien: Romulus Took Some Inspiration from The Last of Us 2

As a die-hard fan of both Alien and The Last of Us franchises, I must say that this cross-pollination of ideas between two beloved stories is nothing short of intriguing! It’s fascinating to see how Fede Alvarez was inspired by Dina from The Last of Us 2 while crafting the character of Kay in Alien: Romulus.

This article has some SPOILERS for Alien: Romulus and The Last of Us 2

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but be thrilled when director Fede Alvarez shared his creative inspiration for the character Kay Harrison in “Alien: Romulus” – a revelation that points to a link between her and Dina from “The Last of Us 2”. Having graced our screens earlier this August, “Romulus” is yet another captivating addition to the iconic “Alien” movie series. Starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu, the film follows a group of space colonists seeking a new home, only to encounter aliens living on an abandoned space station. Intriguingly, it’s been confirmed that Isabela Merced’s character, Kay Harrison, was inspired by Dina from “The Last of Us 2”.

Four years after its debut, The Last of Us Part II continues to be a game that everyone can’t stop talking about, with conversations focusing on its deep themes, captivating characters, and intricate plotlines. Among these characters, Dina – Ellie’s partner – plays a pivotal role in the story. Just like her girlfriend Ellie, Dina is equally adept at fending off the numerous infected swarms during their shared quest for vengeance against Abby. Interestingly, it was recently revealed that there’s a parallel between Dina from The Last of Us Part II and Kay from Alien: Resurrection, specifically in how Kay was pregnant throughout the film’s events.

Alvarez disclosed on Twitter that he had been working on “The Last of Us 2” while penning “Alien: Romulus,” and the storyline about Dina being pregnant in “The Last of Us 2” inspired him to make Kay pregnant too. He found it amusing that he cast Isabella Merced as Kay a year before she was selected to play Dina on the HBO “The Last of Us” series.

Kay Was Inspired by TLOU2’s Dina, Before Kay’s Actor Was Cast As Dina for HBO’s Series

Dina is set to feature in the upcoming second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” TV series. Notably, her character’s relationship with Ellie will be a key focus, as stated by Merced. Filming for the second season was completed earlier this August, but as of now, a specific release date has not been announced.

In the interim, Alvarez has been offering up tidbits about “Alien: Romulus” that some fans may have overlooked upon their initial viewing. These include the identity of Kay’s baby’s true father and a hidden tribute to Ellen Ripley, the main character from earlier “Alien” films. When asked if there were any plans for a potential sequel, Alvarez mentioned he has some ideas but nothing definite, preferring to gauge audience response to the story of “Alien: Romulus” first. Given the positive critical and commercial reception of “Alien: Romulus”, it appears it’s heading in that direction.
