Overwatch 2 Brings Back Transformers Collab, But There’s a Catch

Overwatch 2 has reintroduced its Transformers collaboration, bringing back the four special Transformer-themed character skins. However, unlike the first time, you can’t earn any free rewards this time around – the skins are now only available for purchase in the game’s shop.

Starting July 9, 2024, Overwatch 2 launched a special event teaming up with Transformers as part of Season 11, called Super Mega Ultrawatch. As with many similar events, the Overwatch 2 x Transformers collaboration included new, limited-time character skins available for purchase, and a free in-game event where players could complete challenges to earn rewards.

Overwatch 2 Transformers Collab Missing In-Game Challenges

The popular Transformers collaboration has returned to Overwatch 2 after more than a year, but it’s not quite the same as before. While the four unique Legendary skins – Optimus Prime Reinhardt, Arcee Illari, Bumblebee Bastion, and Megatron Ramattra – are available again with their bundles, the special challenges and rewards that were originally included are missing this time around.

At the start of the event, players could earn rewards every 20 games by completing six different challenges. These rewards included special Player Icons, Name Cards, and Titles inspired by the Autobots and Decepticons, plus 30,000 Battle Pass XP. Unless the game developers add these challenges again in the future or offer the rewards some other way, these exclusive cosmetic items won’t be available, even though the event has returned.

Out of the four collaborative events that have returned to the game, this one is the only one with less content than the original. The second Cowboy Bebop event was a repeat of the first, and the LE SSERAFIM and One Punch Man events in Overwatch 2 actually included added content like new skins—though the LE SSERAFIM event was more of a brand new crossover. It’s currently unknown why these returning events have been inconsistent, or what the plan is for future collaborations in Overwatch 2.

Despite the hype, the latest Transformers collaboration in Overwatch 2 has left many players feeling disappointed. This is especially true since it followed so closely after the popular One Punch Man event and its new skins. Interestingly, the game developers actually cancelled several Transformers skin concepts for the first collaboration – including ideas for Pharah as Starscream, Lucio as Soundwave, and Wrecking Ball as Unicron – all of which fans would have likely enjoyed seeing in this recent update. The limited number of new skins, combined with the absence of any in-game challenges or rewards, has been a major disappointment for a lot of players.

Since Season 9, Overwatch 2 has consistently featured at least one collaboration event each season, and sometimes even two. There were some gaps – like between the initial One Punch Man event in Season 3 and the Diablo and LE SSERAFIM crossovers in Season 7 – but the game kept up the pace until Season 19. That season featured repeats of past events like One Punch Man and now Transformers. With only a few weeks remaining in the current season, it’s unlikely we’ll see a brand new collaboration announced before it ends.
