How to Free Drifter in Risk of Rain 2: Alloyed Collective (Lost in Transit)

Drifter is a playable character unlocked through the Alloyed Collective DLC for Risk of Rain 2, and she plays unlike anyone else in the game. She uses a large sack as a weapon to hit enemies, collect items, and even provide temporary power-ups to herself and her team. Unlocking Drifter requires a bit of effort, but this guide will walk you through the process. We’ll also share some recommended items and skills to help you get the most out of her unique abilities.

Risk of Rain 2: How to Unlock Drifter

With the Alloyed Collective DLC, you’ll find Drifter on one of the new maps it added. Unlocking her is similar to how you unlocked False Son in ROR2. You’ll need to start by going to the Solutional Haunt. Once there, defeat Solus Wing, a major boss in the DLC, and then free Drifter from her cell. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it:

  1. Reach the third stage of a normal run.
  2. Find and interact with an Access Node somewhere in the third stage
  3. Beat the third stage, and go through the Encrypted Portal that appears.
  4. Complete the Conduit Canyon map.
  5. Beat Solus Wing in Solutional Haunt.
  6. Find two Prison Matrix items hidden in Solutional Haunt.
  7. Free Drifter.

Stage Three Alloyed Construct

In the third stage, you’ll find a glowing red object – it looks like a sea mine – called an Access Node, created by the Alloyed Collective. Activating it will tell you a Virtual Orb has spawned. After completing the stage’s teleporter event, a new portal will appear. Use that portal to travel to Conduit Canyon.

Conduit Canyon

This map has a unique challenge: you need to collect Sentry Keys from defeated enemies to open gates and ultimately activate the teleporter. Keep battling enemies until you have at least 6 keys, then you can start the teleporter event whenever you’re prepared.

To unlock the force field guarding the Legendary Chest (located under the starting platform), you’ll need to save one Sentry Key. You can find the chest by taking the holo-rail that runs under the platform.

Okay, so during the Conduit Canyon teleporter event, you’re going to face the Alloy Hunter. And let me tell you, this boss is tough. Unlike some of the others, you really need a solid character build to have a chance. It’s got a bunch of really powerful attacks that can instantly kill you, so seriously, keep moving at all times and try your best not to get hit!

Solutional Haunt and Solus Wing Boss Fight

Solus Wing is a tougher fight than Alloy Hunter, so you’ll need to use all of your character’s skills and the arena’s rails and elevators to succeed. This boss is very durable, and the key to defeating it is hitting its weak points: the three eyes on its face and the antenna on its head. The Railgunner class is particularly effective against Solus Wing.

After damaging Solus Wings enough, heat vents will start appearing around the arena. These vents quickly heat up the entire area, and can be deadly, so you need to find and destroy them as quickly as possible.

Prison Matrices and Drifter Prison

Once you’ve defeated Solus Wing, you’ll need to locate two Prison Matrix items. They’re hidden in a large area accessible through a tunnel near the boss arena. Leaving the arena, head left to find the tunnel leading to the right side of the area.

Explore the large cave to locate two Solus Coffers. Opening both will give you the two Prison Matrices needed to free Drifter. Once you have them, return to the main arena, but watch out! A dangerous MUL-T will try to stop you and attack. If you defeat it, you’ll get a Shaped Glass Lunar Item.

Okay, so when you get back to the arena, head down to the bottom floor – that’s where Drifter’s being held. You’ll need to find the Prison Matrices to shut down the force fields and free him. And if you’re planning to keep going with the run, definitely talk to the MUL-T unit in Drifter’s cell – it’ll give you a bunch of free stuff, which you’re going to need if you want to take on the real final boss of the Alloyed Collective DLC. Trust me, it’s tough!

Best Drifter Build in Risk of Rain 2

Drifter is a quick, close-combat character who thrives with a similar item setup to the Mercenary in Risk of Rain 2. Key items to focus on for a strong Drifter build are:

  • Focus Crystal: Increases the damage you deal to nearby enemies
  • Luminous Shot: Activating your Secondary Skill generates a charge that stacks up to 5 times. Hitting enemies with your Primary Skill consumes charges to deal more damage.
  • Paul’s Goat Hoof: Increases movement speed.
  • Oddly Shaped Opal: Increases armor while out of combat until you take damage.
  • Gasoline: Killing enemies ignites nearby enemies
  • Will-o’-the-Wisp: Killing enemies cause them to explode
  • Hardlight Afterburner: Gain reduced cooldown and an extra charge for Utility Skills
  • Lysate Cell: Gain an extra Special Skill charge. Corrupts all Fuel Cells.

The Substandard Duplicator, a special item from the Alloyed Collective, doubles the number of Temporary Items you receive from Drifter’s basic ability. It’s worth getting if you can!

When equipping Drifter, focus on items that boost her movement speed, help her survive, and deal area-of-effect (AoE) damage. She struggles to consistently hit flying enemies, so things like Gasoline, Will-o’-the-Wisp, Ceremonial Dagger, and even the Ukulele are great choices to help with that weakness.

Drifter is a strong character when played effectively, and her core abilities form the foundation of a straightforward but effective strategy:

  1. Use Repossess (Utility Skill) to bag an enemy and smack them around to generate Junk.
  2. Use Salvage (Special Skill) with your generated Junk to produce Temporary Items
  3. Spend any excess Junk to spam Cleanup (Secondary Skill)
  4. Bonk things with Blunt Force (Primary Skill) when your skills are cooling down.

We highly recommend the Junk Cube as Drifter’s best unlockable skill. While it will make aiming at a distance harder, it significantly increases her damage in close combat. The Junk Cube creates a box that, when hit with your bag, launches forward and deals massive damage to enemies. Before trying out her other skills, we suggest getting comfortable with Drifter’s basic abilities first.
