Consoles With The Most Spider-Man Games

Key Takeaways

  • Spider-Man has appeared in over 60 video games across various consoles, with some of the best titles released in recent years.
  • PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS are among the consoles with a significant number of Spider-Man games, each offering unique experiences.
  • While some Spider-Man games like Spider-Man 3 received mixed reviews, others like Spider-Man: Web of Shadows stood out for their engaging gameplay.

As a longtime gamer and self-proclaimed Spidey enthusiast, I can confidently say that my journey with the web-crawler has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the humble beginnings on the Game Boy Advance to the more recent adventures on the mighty PC, each platform has offered its unique take on the wall-crawler’s world.

For quite some time now, Spider-Man has been a beloved superhero within Marvel Comics, gracing numerous platforms and receiving multiple video game adaptations. To put it into perspective, he has starred in over sixty different video games, which is no small feat. Remarkably, the majority of these games have been well-received by critics and fans alike.

In more casual terms, some fantastic Spider-Man video games have come out recently, but the character has been starring in his own titles since the era of Atari 2600 and Odyssey 2. Essentially, he’s had his own game on almost every console, leading us to wonder: which system boasts the highest number of Spider-Man games? To create this list, we only considered games that are primarily about Spidey, and for clarity, we disregarded backward compatibility but included remastered versions (even though they didn’t impact the final count).

As a devoted gamer, I can’t help but reminisce about the days when the PlayStation 3 ruled the gaming world. It was no secret that this console was a fan favorite, and it wasn’t surprising that it saw a decent number of Spider-Man games. All told, my trusty PS3 welcomed six Spidey titles into its library, none of which were exclusive to Sony’s platform.

The PlayStation 3 was available for a considerable period, resulting in its Spider-Man collection featuring connections to not one but two distinct Spider-Man film series – quite remarkable. In the initial phase of its existence, it received the less-than-satisfactory Spider-Man 3, whereas towards the end of its lifespan, it got tie-ins with the Andrew Garfield films. Among the best games in its Spidey collection, though, is Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, which boasts some of the finest symbiote gameplay found in any Spider-Man game.

The iconic PlayStation 2, known as the best-selling console ever, hosted one of the most acclaimed Spider-Man games – “Spider-Man 2”. This game was a spin-off from Sam Raimi’s movie of the same title, marking the debut of an open-world Spider-Man adventure and the introduction of physics-based web-swinging. It was simply amazing!

Compared to other Spider-Man games, those on the console aren’t as visually stunning or feature-rich. The initial movie tie-in, based on Raimi’s first film, was passable but outshone by its sequel. The PS2 versions of these Spider-Man games were less advanced than their PlayStation 3 counterparts, often appearing less polished and lacking certain features. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows serves as the most notable example of this trend, as it was essentially a port of the PSP’s 2.5D sidescroller instead of a downgraded version of the PS3’s open-world game.

Since they were released around the same time, it’s not unexpected that both Wii and PlayStation 3 had several Spider-Man games. Given that these two systems had distinct features, it’s also understandable that the games for each console experienced significant variations.

The game “Spider-Man: Friend or Foe,” featuring a playable Venom, is known for being quite similar across various consoles. Conversely, “Spider-Man 3” introduced motion controls that were enjoyable when functioning correctly. Unfortunately, not all games shared this fortune. In general, Spider-Man games on the Wii often received lower review scores due to reduced graphics quality and performance problems. “The Amazing Spider-Man” was arguably the most affected, as its developers had to sacrifice its open world and simplify some level design just to make it run on the smaller Wii system.

The Spider-Man games available on Game Boy Advance may seem similar to those sold for home gaming systems, but they actually offered unique experiences. Despite this difference, they were not inferior; instead, they effectively utilized the handheld console’s limited resources and managed to carve out their own distinct identity.

Each of these games was a side-scrolling, 2D platformer featuring similar beat-up combat mechanics. While it wouldn’t be accurate to claim they had exceptional Spider-Man combat systems, they were still enjoyable enough. The standout title in this collection is “Spider-Man: Mysterio’s Menace,” a follow-up to the cherished Spider-Man games originally released on PlayStation 1 and Game Boy Color.

During their respective release periods, both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 shared a majority of games. However, one title that was exclusive to the PlayStation 3 was “Spider-Man: Friend or Foe”. The specific cause behind this exclusivity remains unclear; however, it could be due to the continued popularity of the PlayStation 2, the technical challenges in developing for the PlayStation 3, and the fact that the Xbox 360 was leading sales over the PS2 at that time.

While fans may argue differently, it’s fair to say that the games, apart from a few minor differences, were quite similar across the board. Although today we praise Insomniac’s more recent releases, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 had some exceptional Spider-Man games with compelling narratives, such as ‘Web of Shadows’, ‘Shattered Dimensions’, and ‘Edge of Time’.

For approximately nine years, the Nintendo DS was in circulation, and during nearly each one of those years, it received a Spider-Man game. Just like its predecessor, the Game Boy Advance, the majority of these Spider-Man games for the Nintendo DS were side-scrolling fighting games that bore the same names as their console versions but didn’t share much else except for storylines. Unfortunately, they didn’t have stunning graphics (the image shown here demonstrates this), but they did boast some unique aspects.

Almost all games effectively employed the touchscreen for various actions, primarily to execute attacks. The game Ultimate Spider-Man stood out in this regard, as it allowed players to switch between controlling Spider-Man and Venom. Each character had unique control mechanisms; while Spider-Man predominantly utilized the upper screen and face buttons, using Venom required proficiency with the touchscreen for aiming tendril attacks. Other games, such as Battle for New York, incorporated additional mini-games through the touchscreen. Among these, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows was particularly noteworthy. Although it shed the open world feature from its console counterparts, it gained a fascinating metroidvania-style progression structure instead.

Microsoft Windows, though not typically considered a console, has hosted no less than twelve Spider-Man games, making it difficult to overlook its gaming capabilities in this context. Nowadays, it’s often PlayStation that comes to mind when thinking about Spider-Man games, but the PC has been leading the pack for quite some time. Apart from the upcoming “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” the PC has hosted all significant Spider-Man releases in recent decades. This list includes the original “Marvel’s Spider-Man” and “Miles Morales,” two of the top open-world superhero games available today.

Unfortunately, I have some disappointing news. These days, finding most of these games is quite challenging, especially if you don’t still possess an original disc and a compatible drive. Even with the disc, running these games on modern hardware isn’t straightforward. To make matters worse, due to old licensing deals, it seems unlikely that we’ll ever get remasters or re-releases of any of them.
