Genshin Impact Developer HoYoverse Reveals New Open-World Game

The creators of Genshin Impact, HoYoverse, have announced their next open-world game, Varsapura. They shared a gameplay video showcasing the world of Varsapura and giving a first look at the story.

HoYoverse has become very successful recently, thanks to popular games like Genshin Impact (released in 2020), Honkai: Star Rail (2023), and Zenless Zone Zero (2024). Even with these ongoing, popular games, the studio is continuing to develop new experiences and is now announcing another upcoming title.

HoYoverse Reveals Open-World Game Varsapura

HoYoverse recently revealed Varsapura, showcasing it with a 31-minute gameplay video recorded on a PC with an Nvidia RTX4090 graphics card. The demo appears to be from the beginning of the game, where the player character, known as Hollowone, is applying to join a secretive group called SEAL, or the Shadow Emergency Alliance. Players will be able to customize the protagonist’s appearance to fit their own preferences. While the story is largely a mystery, the demo introduces key elements like a dangerous phenomenon called Mindrot and events called Cognosea disruptions. Through dialogue choices, the player character hints that she wants to join SEAL because a member of the organization previously killed her past self.

The game begins with a tour of the SEAL headquarters, then quickly introduces combat. Players control a character who fights monsters using an umbrella taken from the agent who seemingly killed her. She fights with fast combinations, using both the closed umbrella for strikes and the open umbrella to briefly hover. One special attack visually resembles the Persona summoning from Persona 3, but is performed with a hand gesture instead of a traditional device. The umbrella also functions as a boomerang-like thrown weapon and a means of navigating complex, multi-layered puzzles. Overall, the game creates a similar eerie and unsettling feeling to Control.

Players can choose to play stealthily, automatically performing takedowns when sneaking up on enemies undetected. The character can also stun opponents, creating an opening for attack if discovered. During combat, the game lets you switch between three characters, allowing for extended combos and the use of each character’s special abilities. The video concludes with a look at the open-world environments players can explore both by car and on foot, beyond the main SEAL headquarters.

Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for Varsapura. HoYoverse recently announced they are actively hiring for various roles – programmers, designers, artists, and marketers – to work on the game. This suggests that development is still underway and it may be a while before players can experience HoYoverse’s latest game.
