Given its long-standing mythology, various creatures have dwelt within this world for countless millennia; it’s only natural that some possess extraordinary power thanks to their prolonged existence.
In this series, the so-called “Ancient Pokemon” typically fall into three distinct groups: Pokemon revived from their fossilized remains (Prehistoric), Pokemon that are distant relatives to modern creatures (Paradox), and Pokemon said to have played a role in shaping the world (Legendary & Mythical). However, which Ancient Pokemon are the absolute strongest within the franchise?
10 Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki & Regidrago
Base Stat Total: 580
As per the legend of old Pokemon tales, the powerful Regigigas fashioned the other legendary giants in its own likeness, each embodying distinct elements. This led to the emergence of Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki, and Regidrago, symbolizing rock, ice, magma, electric power, and crystallized dragon energy respectively.
These legendary Pokemon, known for their greatness, exhibit substantial power, each one excelling uniquely due to their Base Stat Total of 580. Regirock boasts superior defense, Regice boasts higher special defense, Regieleki has increased speed, and Regidrago boasts more health points. Interestingly, Registeel stands out among them by exceling in both defense and special defense simultaneously.
9 Walking Wake, Gouging Fire & Raging Bolt

As a die-hard fan, I must express my excitement over the innovative idea in the DLC for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet – the Paradox Pokemon! These creatures are believed to be the ancient ancestors of the legendary Pokemon. Among them, I found three particularly intriguing: Walking Wake, Gouging Fire, and Raging Bolt. Interestingly enough, they are the ancestral counterparts to the famous Legendary Beasts trio: Suicune, Entei, and Raikou respectively!
It’s intriguing to note that these Ancient Pokemon seem to contradict the established narrative about the creation of the Legendary Beasts. What’s surprising is that they share a higher Base Stat Total than their contemporary versions. For instance, Walking Wake boasts high Speed, Gouging Fire has a robust Defense, and Raging Bolt exhibits a significant Special Attack. Moreover, these Pokemon possess a partial Dragon type, which grants them considerable combat resistance.
8 Mew
Base Stat Total: 600
Mew is well-known not just for being the initial Mythical Pokémon introduced in the series, but also as the ancestor of all existing Pokémon. It’s believed that it carries DNA from every single one of them. The significance of Mew to the Pokémon franchise is beautifully portrayed through many of its gameplay aspects.
True to its core idea, Mew emphasizes variety. Its Base Stat Total of 600 might seem high, but it’s well-balanced, allowing it to maximize each stat effectively. However, what truly sets it apart is its unique ability to master every Technical Machine in the game, along with some exceptional and scarcely found moves like Transform. In combat, Mew demonstrates immense power and remains completely unpredictable.
7 Mega Aerodactyl
Base Stat Total: 615
Boasting a Base Stat Total of 515, Aerodactyl is among the mighty Fossil Pokemon. Yet, it falls short when compared to other powerful entities within the game. However, once it undergoes Mega Evolution to become Mega Aerodactyl, its Base Stat Total increases by 100 points. This transformation makes it more potent and swift, transforming it into a formidable force in combat – truly a fierce beast on the battlefield.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to point out that while Mega Aerodactyl falls under the Ancient Pokémon category, its standard form does not. This is due to certain Pokedex entries suggesting that this is the Pokemon’s original appearance, thereby making it likely how it appeared during prehistoric times.
6 Regigigas
Base Stat Total: 670
As a dedicated gamer immersed in the captivating universe of Pokémon, I can’t help but marvel at the colossal significance of Regigigas. Legend has it that this titanic Pokémon employed its staggering strength to shift the continents into their current positions. But wait, there’s more! This behemoth also wielded its power to bring forth the Legendary Giants, a formidable group known for their immense might.
Given its extraordinary background, Regigigas is a formidable Pokémon boasting high Attack and HP, as well as a versatile move set. However, its unique ability, Slow Start, poses a significant disadvantage, reducing its Attack and Speed by half for five consecutive turns. Consequently, Regigigas may not shine as brightly in battles when compared to other ancient Pokémon with similar attributes and abilities.
5 Koraidon
Base Stat Total: 670
Among all the Past Paradox Pokemon, there’s no question that Koraidon stands out as the strongest one. Given that it is also called the Winged King and rumored to have the power to cleave the earth with its bare hands, it seems logical that it ruled over the ancient world.
The remarkable displays of strength shown by Koraidon are accurately portrayed through its stats, boasting a grand total of 670 points. Its Attack and Speed are particularly outstanding. What makes Koraidon truly special is that it’s both a Dragon and Fighting Type, two categories known for their powerful offensive capabilities in the game. However, what sets Koraidon apart is its unique ability, Orichalcum Pulse, which not only conjures intense sunlight but also increases its Attack stat even further.
4 Rayquaza
Base Stat Total: 680
As a gamer, I’ve always admired the legendary Pokemon Rayquaza. This ancient being is part of the Super-Ancient trio, a testament to its age and power. According to legend, it was forged by Arceus with the specific purpose of dominating the skies. Its strength is so immense that it’s capable of restraining Groudon and Kyogre when they clash, even in their Primal Forms.
In terms of combat, Rayquaza excels significantly due to its exceptional statistics, well-balanced type, advantageous signature ability, and diverse repertoire of potent moves. Notably, Mega Rayquaza is renowned for being exceptionally powerful, a form it obtained by consuming meteors, which is not part of the original legend surrounding the Super-Ancient Pokemon.
3 Palkia, Dialga & Giratina

The revered Pokemon trio known as the Creation Trio, famously recognized as such, have been integral to the Pokemon realm for countless millennia, shaping its very essence. In the vast realm of Pokémon, I proudly stand as “The Original One,” Arceus. Legends whisper that I am the very first to have breathed life in the universe we inhabit, spawning every creature that calls this world home. As the central figure of this enchanting franchise’s lore, it’s only fitting that my power and might rank among the highest.
A Base Stat Total of 720 is nothing to scoff at, and it’s also evenly distributed, so Arceus can excel in every single stat and use every move to its advantage. But the most impressive aspect about the Alpha Pokemon is its signature ability, Multitype, which lets it change types depending on the plate it’s holding. This means that its powerful signature move, Judgement, will always have STAB, which makes Arceus a huge threat when faced in battle.
1 Primal Groudon & Primal Kyogre
Base Stat Total: 770
In the captivating world of Pokémon, a unique mechanism called Primal Reversion stands out as one of its most intriguing aspects. This feature allows certain ancient Pokémon, notably Groudon and Kyogre, to transform into their original, primal forms from eons ago, significantly enhancing their power in the process. Essentially, these transformations suggest that this is how they appeared long ago, millions of years back in time.
As the tale goes, Arceus brought forth Groudon and Kyogre as a means to oversee the earth and oceans, which are essential for shaping this world. This is likely why these two Pokemon grew to be so massive and powerful. While their initial forms are already quite potent, their Primal forms surpass them in power, boasting higher stats, improved typing, and more effective abilities. Essentially, the Primal transformations function like pseudo-Mega Evolutions, enabling Groudon and Kyogre to fully realize their true capabilities.
