The creators of Hollow Knight: Silksong have shared some details about how they designed the game’s bosses. Like the original Hollow Knight, Silksong is a difficult Metroidvania-style game. But Team Cherry has explained that they intentionally made the bosses act differently than the ones in their 2017 title.
Gamers have been eagerly awaiting Hollow Knight: Silksong, and it’s finally here! This new game from Team Cherry lets players control Hornet as she explores the kingdom of Pharloom. Like the original Hollow Knight, Silksong features tough boss battles – some players even think they’re more difficult than those in the first game. While fans discuss which bosses are the hardest, the developers have recently shared insights into how they designed these challenging encounters.
Silksong’s Bosses Pick Their Attacks Differently Than Those in Hollow Knight
GamesRadar+ noticed details from an interview with William Pellen and Ari Gibson, published in an ACMI guidebook, revealing changes to boss behavior in Silksong compared to Hollow Knight. Pellen explained that they completely reworked how bosses choose their attacks. In Hollow Knight, bosses reacted to the player’s position when deciding what attack to use. In Silksong, bosses are more proactive, meaning they choose attacks independently rather than simply reacting to the player.
Something we changed significantly in Silksong, though it might not be obvious while playing, is how bosses choose what attacks to use. We completely redesigned that system.
According to Pellen, bosses will now first decide what action they’ll take, and then move into the best position to perform it. This is a change from the previous game, and could make boss fights harder to anticipate. The developer says this new approach to boss programming improves their positioning, which is intended to balance the player’s increased movement options when playing as Hornet in Silksong.
These design details show how much work Team Cherry invested in developing Silksong and explain why it took so long. The game expanded on the winning formula of the original Hollow Knight, but also included significant changes, such as a completely revised system for how bosses work. Whether players prefer the boss fights in one game over the other, Silksong‘s new approach makes them feel unique and sets it apart.
Team Cherry is still actively supporting and expanding Hollow Knight: Silksong. They’ve been releasing updates, like Update 4 which fixed several bugs, to make the game even better. Plus, the developers have hinted at future downloadable content (DLC), and the game’s composer, Christopher Larkin, is currently creating more music for them. This suggests we might see new bosses added down the line, potentially similar to the DLC content released for the original Hollow Knight. While nothing is confirmed yet, fans can look forward to the possibility of even more challenging fights.
