Team Cherry hasn’t ruled out making another game after Hollow Knight: Silksong, but they wouldn’t consider it a direct sequel. Two of the studio’s leaders shared this in a recent interview where they talked about the potential for future Hollow Knight games and Silksong‘s achievements.
The release of Hollow Knight: Silksong on September 4th was incredibly popular, even causing several online stores to temporarily crash. Within just a week, over 5 million people had started playing the game. Although being available on Xbox Game Pass helped its launch, around 3 million players actually bought the game directly on Steam.
If Hollow Knight 3 Happens, It Won’t Be Silksong 2
In a recent interview with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the team behind Hollow Knight: Silksong discussed the game’s success. Co-directors Ari Gibson and William Pellen expressed satisfaction with how the metroidvania turned out, feeling it fully realized their original vision. When asked about a potential third Hollow Knight game, the developers didn’t commit to anything, but did share one key idea: they envision any future installments as standalone titles, existing separately from each other. This effectively rules out a sequel to Silksong.
Originally, Silksong began as downloadable content for Hollow Knight, promised in 2014 during the game’s Kickstarter campaign after reaching a funding goal. But by 2019, the developers, Team Cherry, had decided to make Silksong a completely separate game, though still related to the first one. With the success of this new game, the Australian studio is likely confident in its approach to making sequels. However, it’s still uncertain whether they will create a third Hollow Knight game anytime soon.
Silksong DLC Is Likely Coming Before Any New Team Cherry Game
The original game received a lot of updates and improvements after it launched, and it looks like the upcoming sequel, Silksong, is heading in the same direction. The developers, Team Cherry, have already announced plans for downloadable content (DLC), suggesting they’ll be supporting the game for a long time.
Ideally, if there are more games in the future, we hope they’ll all be separate, standalone experiences – existing independently of each other.
Given the success of Hollow Knight, it’s probably going to be a long wait before the Australian studio Team Cherry announces its next game. Hollow Knight‘s success has given the small, three-person team both the financial security and creative freedom to take their time, as evidenced by the lengthy development of Silksong – a delay that even sparked a humorous online phenomenon called “Silksanity” among eager fans. Their recent achievements suggest they can afford to work at their own pace.
