Dying Light: The Beast Brought Kyle Crane Back Because of a Prior Leak

As a seasoned survivor of the infected-ridden wastelands, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement upon hearing about the standalone expansion to Dying Light, titled The Beast. Having spent countless hours running for my life in Techland’s post-apocalyptic world, I’m thrilled to see Kyle Crane back in action, albeit a little more… enhanced this time around.

At the recent Gamescom Opening Night Live event, it was me who was thrilled to hear about the upcoming release of Dying Light: The Beast. For fans like myself who have admired Techland’s previous work, this announcement truly stole the show. This new open-world zombie adventure promises a whopping 18 hours of gameplay! In Dying Light: The Beast, I’ll be stepping back into the shoes of the series’ original protagonist, Kyle Crane. But this time around, he’s been through a decade of forced experiments that have granted him an arsenal of new abilities to help me survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Initially, Dying Light: The Beast was part of another expansion or downloadable content for Dying Light. However, due to a leak of what was supposed to be DLC for Dying Light 2, the game expanded into a full-fledged standalone title. As explained by Tymon Smektala, the franchise director, this unexpected turn of events was driven by the leaked content bringing back Kyle Crane and the team’s desire to tell his story, pushing the game beyond its original boundaries.

How Dying Light: The Beast Went From Leaked DLC To a Standalone Release

Launched in February 2022, Dying Light 2 was designed with a five-year post-release support plan from the start, a commitment that Techland is still honoring. This roadmap encompasses quick fixes for balance and performance issues, along with future content releases. In the initial plan for Dying Light 2‘s post-launch updates, Techland pledged to deliver two paid story DLCs for the game, with the first one slated for release in 2022, and the second initially scheduled for 2023.

Initially planned for release in November 2022, the second story DLC for “Dying Light 2” never came to fruition. There were whispers suggesting that this expansion had grown beyond its initial scope and transformed into a larger project. In a recent interview with Game Rant, Smektala hinted at this possibility.

Initially conceived as an expansion pack for Dying Light 2, DLC titled “[Dying Light: The Beast]” sparked such excitement among fans that they were able to uncover the storyline of the upcoming DLC 2 prematurely. This revelation prompted us to consider reviving Kyle Crane as the main character once again.

Based on Smektala’s report, an early leak of content for the second DLC of Dying Light 2 exposed some confidential story elements online. This unexpected event led to the decision to feature fan-favorite character Kyle Crane as the protagonist and transform the DLC into a full standalone game titled as we see today. To keep their promise, Techland is offering Dying Light 2: Ultimate Edition players an additional DLC called Dying Light: The Beast. This move showcases a consumer-friendly approach by the developer. Although leaks can disrupt the development process, Techland appears to have embraced the situation and aimed to enhance it further. Given that Kyle Crane’s return is just one of many surprises, fans should expect more exciting revelations in store.

How Dying Light: The Beast Has Been Shaped by The Community

However, it’s not just the leaks that have influenced the development of Dying Light: The Beast. In fact, during the same interview, Smektala emphasized the significant role that fan input plays in Techland’s development process.

The feedback we received from Dying Light 1 and 2 changed the balance of gameplay elements that make up Dying Light: the parkour, the combat, and the day and night cycle. All of this has evolved based on player comments.

Techland has always been attentive to its community’s feedback, and it’s exciting that the development team is not only incorporating suggestions from the past ten years into Dying Light: The Beast, but also applying those lessons for future improvements. Here’s hoping that when Dying Light: The Beast releases, it will be the most well-balanced and mechanically robust game in the series.
