The Blood of Dawnwalker Borrows A Key Zelda: Breath of the Wild Feature

I just read an interview with the director of The Blood of Dawnwalker and I’m really excited about how the main quest is shaping up! It sounds a lot like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – you’re basically free to tackle the main goal however you want. Speaking of Breath of the Wild, it’s amazing how much that game has influenced things already. Even though it came out less than ten years ago, so many new adventure games are taking inspiration from its open world and letting players explore and choose their own path.

Originally revealed earlier this year, The Blood of Dawnwalker is a dark fantasy action-RPG created by many of the developers who worked on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. In the game, players control Coen, a character who is part human and part vampire. During the day, he assists people and fights with a sword, while at night he uses his supernatural abilities – like teleporting, wall-crawling, and feeding on enemies to heal – along with his claws to battle foes.

The Blood of Dawnwalker’s Main Quest Takes a Page Out of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Playbook

The central idea behind The Blood of Dawnwalker is a ticking clock: players have 30 days to save their family from a powerful vampire. This timer decreases each time you finish a side quest. In a recent Eurogamer interview, the game’s director, Konrad Tomaskiewicz, reiterated that the game doesn’t have a traditional main quest. Instead, your single goal is rescuing your family, and Tomaskiewicz explained that it’s possible to complete this objective at any point in the game.

You’ve located your enemy’s position and can strike whenever you choose. You can tackle this challenge alone, or you can spend time strengthening yourself – by finding powerful gear, improving your skills, completing quests, and gathering allies to assist you.

Like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Blood of Dawnwalker lets players tackle the main goal relatively early in the game. In Breath of the Wild, you can technically fight the final boss, Calamity Ganon, right after the opening, but it’s much harder that way. The game encourages you to complete side quests, get stronger, and find powerful items first. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also offers this same freedom, allowing players to face the final boss after just finishing the initial story section.

Beyond the primary objective of saving Coen’s family within 30 days, The Blood of Dawnwalker won’t have a traditional main storyline. Rebel Wolves wants players to forge their own path through the game, freely choosing which activities to pursue and in what order. This open, non-linear design is how the developers aim to make their game stand out.
