How to win at Gift of the Gab in Where Winds Meet without tearing your hair out

The ‘Gift of the Gab’ minigame in Where Winds Meet can be really irritating – second only to the geese! You’ll probably encounter it before you’re properly taught how to play, and even after the tutorial, it’s tough to win until you unlock the Scholar profession. The game doesn’t really explain that’s how you improve your chances, though.

This guide will help you consistently win at Gift of the Gab in Where Winds Meet. We’ll cover how to unlock the Scholar profession, which is key to success, and then explain exactly how the game mode works so you can play it with confidence.

How to win at Gift of the Gab in Where Winds Meet

Just to be clear, you won’t be able to succeed in Gift of the Gab competitions in Where Winds Meet until you finish the Legacy: Scholar’s Path quest and gain access to the Scholar profession.

Although Gift of the Gab seems like it’s about cleverly responding to what others say, it’s actually a game decided by your stats. You can only consistently win by improving your character through the Scholar skill tree with things like stat boosts, better cards, and crafted talismans.

You can become a Scholar once you reach level 13 and finish the “Gift of the Gab: Silver Tongue” quest – sometimes called “Gift of the Gab: Spring” in the game menus. If the quest hasn’t started yet, talk to Song Jiu at Heaven’s Pier. He’ll tell you about a mysterious pipa player who stole some valuable teachings from him.

After finishing Song Jiu’s quest, you can unlock the Scholar profession by finding and starting the ‘Legacy: Scholar’s Path’ quest in your journal’s exploration section, then going to Deerforage Grove. Completing this quick quest makes the ‘Gift of the Gab’ challenge much more manageable – it finally works as intended, which is how it should have been all along.

Gift of the Gab explained

Now that you’ve gotten over the biggest hurdle, I can explain how Gift of the Gab actually works.

The game features two ways to compete: Rhetoric Duel and Free Persuasion. Rhetoric Duel is a card-based battle, while Free Persuasion lets you debate your opponent using an AI chatbot. However, the chatbot debate option isn’t always available.

Once you start a Rhetoric Duel, you’ll pick a style – Bluster, Provocation, Rebuttal, or Filibuster. I usually just go with the style the game recommends at the beginning of each battle, and it works fine. However, it might be helpful to see what style your opponent is using and choose yours to counter it. These styles have strengths and weaknesses against each other, similar to rock-paper-scissors.

  • Rebuttal is strong against Filibuster
  • Filibuster is strong against Bluster
  • Bluster is strong against Provocation
  • Provocation is strong against Rebuttal

Okay, so the idea behind Gift of the Gab is that you’re supposed to pick a card that’s a good comeback to whatever your opponent types in the chat. Like, if they’re throwing around quotes, you’d pick a card called “Hold Your Tongue” or something. But honestly? Forget all that! Just focus on what the card actually does. It’s a timed game, and you’ll waste too much time reading what they’re saying to bother trying to match cards to their arguments. It’s way more effective to just play your best cards as quickly as possible!

If you want to win, you really need to play cards as fast as possible! The goal is to drain your opponent’s focus bar before they drain yours, and you need Inspiration points to do it. The stronger cards – the ones that really pack a punch – cost the most points, so you have to time things right. Personally, I love using attack cards with the sword icons, and I try to defend by either dealing a ton of damage or silencing my opponent, which stops them from playing cards for a little while. It’s a great way to disrupt their strategy!

When you see Q or E on the screen, press those keys to activate a special effect. A window will pop up letting you choose which effect you want. Hitting these buttons is really important for winning challenging games, so try to get them all!

A Gift of the Gab match continues until either you or your opponent lose concentration – shown by the green and white bars on the screen – or the time runs out. If you lose, that’s okay! You can usually play the match again. Take some time to check your stats, improve your cards, and create talismans, then come back ready for a rematch, just like in Yu-Gi-Oh!
