Among Marvel’s captivating space-faring characters, Phyla-Vell stands out as one. Born artificially by Elysius, who was Mar-Vell’s lover, Phyla was a second attempt at creating life following the immense popularity of their first son, Genis-Vell. Genis, wielding the Captain Marvel title, had the power to destroy and rebuild entire universes, but with minor alterations. One of those changes was the creation of Phyla herself. Overwhelmed by cosmic consciousness, Genis’s mental state deteriorated, disgracing the Captain Marvel name. Phyla seized the opportunity to take on this title, dragged Genis into an alternate dimension, and held him down while Elysius and their friend Starfox worked to mend his fractured mind. Eventually, they began working together as heroes. An early mission saw them battling against Magus, a sinister future version of Adam Warlock. During this fight, Phyla encountered Moondragon, a telepathic individual who would later become her spouse.
In the Annihilation event, Phyla-Vell reappeared, teaming up with Star-Lord and Nova against Annihilus. During the fight, she seized the Quantum Bands from Annihilus, who had previously taken them from Quasar. After defeating Annihilus, Phyla took on Quasar’s role and kept his Quantum Bands. This empowered her to fly, absorb energy, shoot semi-transparent blasts, summon a powerful sword, and even steal additional power boosts from villains like the Super-Adaptoid. However, a confrontation with Ultron resulted in the death of her beloved companion, Moondragon. Seeking vengeance with Adam Warlock’s aid, Phyla wasn’t content with just revenge. Later, she joined Star-Lord’s reformed Guardians of the Galaxy, but both she and Drax ultimately fell at the hands of Mentor. In Oblivion, Phyla struck a deal with the Moon’s Dragon, a demon that had influenced Moondragon. The demon possessed Moondragon, compelling Phyla to become an avatar of the afterlife before it would release her. Upon returning to life, Phyla donned a lethal new outfit and adopted the moniker Martyr.
Phyla’s tenure as Martyr was short but significant. She got entangled in the conflict between the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Inhumans, abducting a princess to intensify the hostilities. Her plan succeeded, halting talks and promptly escalating the situation into a major crisis. The Inhumans detonated a bomb so powerful that it split open a rift in the multiverse. Adam Warlock attempted to rectify this predicament, but his solution led him to encounter Magus, with whom he would ultimately merge. Martyr felt her true purpose was to slay Magus, based on cryptic advice from the demon. She stabbed Adam with her sword, but he lived and underwent further transformation. The Guardians made a second attempt to stop Magus by time travel, which allowed Magus to reverse the tables and wound Phyla. Phyla survived in Magus’s captivity. Her demise occurred soon after when she unveiled a cocoon she believed contained Magus, only to find resurrected Thanos inside, who swiftly ended her life. Her last recorded appearance was in 2015’s Deadpool vs. Thanos #3, where she attempted and failed to eliminate Thanos from the depths of Hell.
