In the game “Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition”, pets are available, but they function differently compared to other games. Unlike having a cat or dog as a companion during exploration, these pets can be unlocked in Mira, but their roles are more limited. However, if you wish to witness additional heart-to-heart events, it’s beneficial to obtain pets. Here’s how you can get them:
1. Complete the main story up until you reach the first major city, New Lystheim.
2. After reaching New Lystheim, visit the city’s upper district and look for a building called “Tech Lab”.
3. Speak with the NPC named Riki within the Tech Lab to begin the process of unlocking pets.
4. Follow the in-game instructions to complete various tasks and missions related to Riki, which will eventually grant you access to pet companions.
How to Unlock Pets in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
To access the Pets feature, you’ll need to progress sufficiently in the game’s narrative to trigger the Nine Lives affinity quest. This mission can only be unlocked once you’ve reached Chapter 5 of the story, and you should also have a character level of at least 20.
Nine Lives Walkthrough
In this scenario, you’re tasked with finding a missing cat named Aisha. Begin your search in the Administrative District. Close to the Hangar, you’ll spot a green tent where Conner, Nathan, and Monica are gathered. Chat them up for clues about the cat. Subsequently, journey to the Industrial District and engage with Mathias. Following the brief interlude, navigate your way to Cliffside Beach, which is located east of FN Site 116.
Head towards the monster and defeat it to initiate a scene. Then, travel northwest towards Biahno Hills (or teleport if you’ve unlocked a nearby location or FN Site). In this region, grab any blue crystal with an orange diamond symbol on top to collect catnip. Once you have enough catnip, make your way back to Cliffside Beach and chat with Mathias. Following another scene, you’ll encounter another monster drawn by the trap meant for Aisha. To finish this mission, return to New LA and talk to Mathias once more.
As a gamer, I’ve just gained the privilege to adopt pets at the BLADE Barracks! At any given moment, only one pet can be active. If I want to switch between my furry friends, I need to use the terminal at the Customization Center. Plus, keep an eye out for Basic Missions; they’ll unlock more pets for me over time.
What Are Pets For?

In the BLADE Barracks, your lively pet isn’t merely there for show. Instead, several Affinity Missions can only begin when you have an active pet. For instance, to start Lao’s first Affinity Mission, you need a dog at the BLADE Barracks, and for Elma’s second Affinity Mission, you require a cat. Regarding their purpose, pets serve more than just decorative functions, but they don’t offer any additional benefits beyond these Affinity Missions.
