Witcher 3 Wasn’t the Most Popular New PS Plus Extra Game This Month

Witcher 3 Wasn't the Most Popular New PS Plus Extra Game This Month

Key Takeaways

  • 2022 roguelike indie Cult of the Lamb surprisingly attracted more players on PS Plus Extra than The Witcher 3 in August 2024.
  • The Witcher 3 saw a near-131% increase in players on PS Plus Extra this month, whereas Cult of the Lamb’s player count skyrocketed by 338%.
  • When directly compared, Cult of the Lamb outperformed The Witcher 3 in player count by 55.4%.

As a long-time gamer who’s witnessed the evolution of gaming from the days of Atari to the modern era of PS Plus Extra, I must say, this latest data has taken me by surprise! I never thought a relatively new indie game like Cult of the Lamb would outshine the legendary The Witcher 3 in terms of player count.

Newly released data indicates that more players have been drawn to the game “Cult of the Lamb” compared to “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” on the PS Plus Extra platform. Both games joined the service’s August 2024 lineup, but surprisingly, the 2022 indie roguelike title is experiencing a larger influx of players than the 2015 Game of the Year winner, “The Witcher 3.”

As a dedicated gamer, even after a decade, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to hold its ground among the best open-world games. Its fanbase is so passionate that they go as far as replicating game locations in real life! Needless to say, I was thrilled when The Witcher 3 was announced for PS Plus Extra in August 2024. But it appears that another indie gem added to the service this month has been stealing the spotlight from Geralt’s adventure.

2022’s indie sensation, “Cult of the Lamb” by Massive Monster and Devolver Digital, has been a runaway hit among PS Plus Extra members, outshining the acclaimed “The Witcher 3” from CD Projekt RED. While “The Witcher 3” saw a notable increase in players with a boost of 130.93% upon its addition to PS Plus Extra in August 2024, it couldn’t keep pace with the massive surge of “Cult of the Lamb,” which saw a staggering 338.81% player spike across both PS4 and PS5 platforms. Although these figures can’t be directly compared, when placed side by side, “Cult of the Lamb” drew in a whopping 55.4% more players than “The Witcher 3.”

Cult of the Lamb Trounces Witcher 3 in the PS Plus Player Charts for August 2024

1) In August 2024, Cult of the Lamb became the largest addition to PlayStation Plus Extra and also the fifth most well-received debut on the service this year. Interestingly, The Witcher 3 moved up from the 79th spot to number 32 on TrueTrophies’ list of most frequently played games, a significant improvement. Although the player numbers for these titles might have been predicted differently, August 2024 has still proven to be an exceptional month for PlayStation Plus overall. Recent data shows that PS Plus subscribers were drawn more towards the newly added games in August compared to the previous month.

It must be noted, though, that TrueTrophies’ data is collated from a sample size of 3.1 million PlayStation Network accounts, which is a tiny fraction of the 120 million-strong PlayStation install base. Therefore, these reports shouldn’t be taken as an absolute measure of popularity for PS Plus Extra games. Regardless, with August now wrapping up, fans are looking forward to the announcement of PS Plus Extra’s September 2024 lineup in the coming days.
