Street Fighter 6 Hands-On Terry Bogard Preview

As a long-time fan of both SNK and Street Fighter, I must admit that the arrival of Terry Bogard in Street Fighter 6 is like a dream come true for me. I’ve been following Terry’s journey since his debut in Fatal Fury, and to see him seamlessly integrated into the world of Street Fighter is nothing short of fantastic.

The development of Street Fighter 6’s second year is progressing smoothly, as SNK’s character Terry Bogard makes his appearance on September 24. At Gamescom Opening Night Live, fans were treated to a fresh glimpse of him, and later, a demo for Terry was played during the event by Game Rant. It became immediately evident that Capcom and SNK have successfully captured Terry’s persona and atmosphere, while seamlessly integrating him into the universe of Street Fighter 6.

Terry Bogard is a well-recognized figure in various fighting game communities, adored by fans globally for his character traits and combat techniques. His growth as a character within the storyline has cemented him as a significant symbol for SNK. Interestingly, Terry has made appearances in games outside of the SNK universe in recent years. Notably, he previously joined forces with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and his upcoming appearance will be in Street Fighter 6.

Street Fighter 6 perfectly captures everything that fans adore about the fighter. From his sleek design to his stance, moveset, and Super Arts, this isn’t just any version of Terry Bogard in Street Fighter 6; it’s the arrival of SNK’s character in Capcom’s classic fighting game. Intricately detailed right down to Terry’s Buster Wolf move, which feels authentically familiar rather than a simple name-reuse for a new maneuver, this crossover demonstrates an impressive ability to maintain a fighter’s identity while crossing over between properties. Capcom and SNK have undeniably achieved this blend with remarkable skill, as evidenced during our 30-minute demo at Gamescom. Two things were particularly notable: Terry’s moveset is both complex and intuitive, and his skills excel in the mid-range fighting zone.

Terry is a Complex, Yet Intuitive Mid-Range Fighter

Following an examination of Terry’s combos and special moves, it was evident that executing his best moves required a good deal of inputs. Given the game mechanics of Street Fighter 6, this wasn’t surprising, but as the demo progressed, we found ourselves needing to test his abilities less frequently and delving into the menu less often. Once we performed a move, it became straightforward to remember its input sequence since they seemed to be logically structured in accordance with the move’s appearance. This suggests that Terry exhibits the “easy to learn” aspect of some Street Fighter 6 characters, yet he also appears to be a “hard to master” type of character as well. It’s likely that fans will enthusiastically embrace Terry, and it’ll be intriguing to observe his potential at expert play levels.

overall strategy of this character will keep opponents guessing due to his ability to swiftly approach or attack from a moderate distance. His reach complements his character image well, and it’s evident that there are multiple playstyles available for him. We discovered Terry to be an entertaining character, both as a close-range juggler who keeps the opponent trapped or airborne at all times, and as someone who maintains distance while executing Terry’s various combos and Super Arts to engage and disengage from combat. The moves like Passing Sway, Born Knuckle, and Buster Wolf are excellent for closing distances or playing in that manner, whereas Power Geyser, Rising Fang help him easily retaliate in close quarters by punishing his opponents effectively.

It remains uncertain how Terry will significantly alter the strategy (or “meta”) of Street Fighter 6, given that he was tested against AI, but his adaptability, reach, and design that encourages both easy learning and mastery suggest he’ll leave a notable impact on the fighting game world. He excels in various aspects, and the game does an excellent job of making him feel versatile.
