Call of Duty: Warzone Officially Reveals New Area 99 Map

As a seasoned gamer with decades of Call of Duty under my belt, the revelation of the Area 99 map coming to Warzone Season 1 has me buzzing like a mosquito drone (remember those?). The nostalgia of Nuketown’s birthplace is palpable, and I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu as I reminisce about my first encounters with that iconic map.

In the upcoming Season 1 of Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision unveiled a fresh map named Area 99. This season kicks off post the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Notably, this new Warzone map is the origin of the widely recognized Nuketown map, a staple in previous Black Ops games.

In conjunction with the release of Black Ops 6, Warzone is set to undergo significant updates, as both games will incorporate Call of Duty’s innovative omnidirectional movement system. The recent Call of Duty NEXT event has confirmed that backpacks and Modern Warfare 3’s Guardian and Mosquito Drone scorestreaks will no longer be present in Warzone. However, the Wildcard system is set to make a comeback. While some elements of the game may change or disappear, players can still utilize weapons from Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3, and look forward to fresh content such as modes and maps in Warzone Season 1 and beyond.

Area 99 represents a fresh Warzone Resurgence map design, reminiscent of the fast-paced and relentless action seen in the iconic Nuketown multiplayer stage. As the original site of Nuketown, Area 99 will delve into its background, offering intriguing insights. Key locations such as the Reactor, Cooling Towers, Warehouse, and Nuketown Shipping facility can be accessed via primary roadways for foot or vehicle travel. The Test Site and Bunker, among other points of interest, are connected by open trenches, pipes, and electrical conduits. Combat encounters in this Warzone map, like others, are likely to occur around the central area where the Reactor POI is situated.

In a nod to retrofuturism, Treyarch has designed Area 99 with influences from 1950s diners and media, making it rich in vintage architecture and design elements. The area is further identified by its official mascot, Archie Atom, who graces signs and billboards scattered across the Resurgence map. As per the storyline of Warzone, Area 99 was deserted in March 1962, and it has been gradually deteriorating and emitting radiation ever since. Despite the radiation, players can move around the map, hunt for adversaries, and engage in combat without fear.

On Area 99, you’ll find a layout reminiscent of Rebirth Island in Warzone, as Treyarch describes it as a “condensed and tight-knit” location. This means that combat situations can erupt swiftly once players are dropped onto the map.

At Call of Duty NEXT, no specific launch date was given for Warzone Season 1, but further details are expected in the upcoming months. Excitingly, alongside the new Area 99 map, players of Warzone can anticipate the arrival of Classic Prestige, a Mastery Camo tracking system, Dark Ops Challenges, and additional fresh features during the first season. It’s also worth noting that the much-loved Verdansk map will return to Warzone in spring 2025.
