If current trends hold, having extra computer RAM on hand will be incredibly valuable – almost like having a stash of gold. Recent industry-wide memory shortages have caused RAM prices to skyrocket in just the past few weeks.
These days, it can actually cost more to upgrade your computer’s memory than to buy an entirely new graphics card or even a current-generation gaming console.
Just how expensive has memory become? Checking prices at retailers like Newegg reveals a worrying trend for anyone building or upgrading a computer. Whether you need a single 16GB stick or a full 64GB kit, you’ll likely pay more than ever before. Memory prices have jumped as much as 250% since November began.
Here’s a look at how much the price of RAM has increased for consumers, ranging from 16GB (2 x 8GB) to 64GB (2 x 32GB) kits. This data focuses on the latest DDR5 RAM generation.
| PC Memory | November 1 Price | November 26 Price | Percentage Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16GB T-Force | $77.99 | $177.99 | 128.2% |
| 16GB Kingston Fury | $62.99 | $149.99 | 138.1% |
| 32GB T-Force | $96.99 | $339.99 | 250.5% |
| 32GB G.Skill Flare X5 | $97.99 | $269.99 | 175.5% |
| 32GB Corsair Vengeance | $142.99 | $406.99 | 184.6% |
| 32GB G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO | $104.99 | $279.99 | 166.7% |
| 64GB Corsair Vengeance | $239.99 | $839.99 | 250% |
| 64GB G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO | $204.99 | $629.99 | 207.3% |
| 64GB G.Skill Flare X5 | $204.99 | $569.99 | 178% |
Recent data indicates a shortage of memory is causing significant disruption in the market. Prices are becoming unpredictable, with some retailers now listing components at “Market Price” – a practice typically reserved for items like lobster and fresh seafood.
TopMob contacted several RAM manufacturers to ask about potential price drops. However, everyone they spoke with expressed uncertainty. Manufacturers explained that shortages can take months, or even years, to resolve and meet existing demand. They’re essentially taking a wait-and-see approach, evaluating the situation week by week.
Why Is There A PC Memory Shortage?
Although the recent price hikes for RAM might seem abrupt and significant, they’re not unexpected for those keeping up with industry news. If you haven’t noticed, the main driver behind these increased costs is the growing demand from artificial intelligence.
Okay, so as more and more AI stuff gets built everywhere, all the important parts – like memory and storage – are getting snapped up. Companies working on AI are willing to pay a lot more to get what they need, which means there’s just not enough left for us regular gamers and everyone else. Honestly, it feels like this shortage is going to get even bigger before it gets better, and it’s pretty frustrating.
According to Dan Nystedt, vice president of research at TriOrient, a shortage could significantly impact the costs of PCs, laptops, consumer electronics, and cars, as these all rely on affordable memory chips, as he told CNBC.
