Everything Metroid Prime 4 Locks Behind Amiibo

Certain features in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond can only be accessed by players who collect all three exclusive Amiibo figures. These figures significantly increase the overall cost of experiencing everything the game offers – costing more than the game itself. While these Amiibo-exclusive features aren’t necessary to complete the game, players should be aware of what they’ll be missing if they choose not to purchase them.

After a long wait of over 18 years and three different Nintendo consoles since Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid Prime 4 is coming to Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2 on December 4th. Players will once again control Samus Aran, exploring the planet Viewros on her motorcycle, Vi-O-La, and developing her psychic abilities while facing off against a new enemy: rival bounty hunter Sylux.

With the long wait since the last game and the franchise’s popularity, Metroid Prime 4 is one of the most hyped titles for the Switch 2. However, some features are locked behind the use of three special Amiibo figures: Samus, Sylux, and Samus & Vi-O-La. According to Nintendo, many of these features revolve around Samus’ motorcycle. Scanning the Samus & Vi-O-La Amiibo lets players customize Vi-O-La’s color, view the motorcycle’s total mileage, and once per day, speed up its energy boost recharge. The solo Samus Amiibo will also allow players to change the background music while riding the motorcycle.

The Samus Amiibo gives players a useful, once-per-day ability: an energy shield that can absorb up to 99 damage and fully restore her health. The Sylux Amiibo, while less practical, offers some unique features. Tapping it plays a random line of dialogue from the character, and after completing the game, it unlocks a movie recapping the story. Tapping any older Metroid or Metroidrelated Super Smash Bros.* Amiibo will also trigger a random in-game sound.

Previous main games in the Metroid Prime series haven’t used Amiibo figures for any special features, though other Metroid games have. For instance, Metroid Dread let players use any Samus Amiibo to fully restore health or other Metroid character Amiibo to get more missiles. In Metroid: Samus Returns on the 3DS, certain Amiibo unlocked extra missile, energy, or Aeion tanks. Any Metroid Amiibo also revealed a tool to help find Metroids and gave Samus a special suit from Metroid Fusion. Amiibo have also added features to games like Mario Party 10, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Bayonetta 2.

The new Amiibo figures for Metroid Prime 4 add extra features to the game, but they’re quite pricey. The three figures together cost around $100, while the game itself costs $60-$70 depending on which Switch console you have. Amiibo prices went up earlier this year, and with the Samus & Vi-O-La figure costing $40 and the others $30 each, many fans might not bother buying them, meaning those extra features could go unused.
