As a fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the intricate world of NieR Automata, I can’t help but marvel at the masterful character development that Yoko Taro and his team have crafted. The journey of 9S and A2, two androids on a quest to understand their existence, is one that resonates deeply with me.

9S eventually makes it to the tower and tries to enter, having been informed by his Pod companion that this structure serves as a shared reference point for machine consciousness. However, upon arrival, he encounters 21O who had transformed into a B-type unit for combat purposes. Despite being connected to The Bunker network, she was also infected and chose to wound herself instead of potentially harming him.
Meanwhile, A2 continues to entertain the children at Pascal’s village at Lily’s request while they prepare for an attack from more machine lifeforms. 9S, realizing that he needs keys to gain entry to the main tower, located two adjacent smaller ones that have them. Though he is met with machine life forms, they’re far from hostile, but he slaughters them anyway in his rage, despite Pod 153’s protests.
Forming Your Own Identity
Initially perceived as harsh and uncaring towards artificial beings, A2 seems to contradict this image due to her bond with Lily and affection for mechanical “offspring”. Being closely tied to the Resistance, the machines in Pascal’s village refer to her as an older sibling, a role she hesitantly fulfills. Initially, A2 sports a seductive appearance that mirrors the “femme fatale” stereotype, characterized by long hair. However, when she cuts her hair, her character evolves into a more balanced and relatable figure on-screen.
1. When Lily asks A2 for assistance, she subtly manipulates her by recalling how Pascal assisted her in the past and using Lily’s old nickname to do so. This shows how much Lily has evolved, as she initially came across as the shy, teased member of the group, a common trope in anime. Interestingly, within the game YoRHa – Pearl Harbor Descent Record, it is disclosed that Lily is an L-type model, where “L” signifies “Lover”.
As a gamer, I’d say it’s clear that Lily was designed for relaxation among other purposes, and it was Rose who saved her. Yet, she’s managed to carve out her unique identity – as she puts it, becoming an adult. Some might argue that Lily challenges the stereotype of the “cute and innocent” anime girl often objectified in Japanese media. Her transformation in clothing (from shorts and thigh-highs to cargo pants) certainly supports this viewpoint.
Continuing To Break The Cycle
Both characters reflect how their environments and encounters mold their identities, but 9S undergoes a more dramatic transformation. Initially, he held a black-and-white perspective on life, viewing machines as evil and androids as good, which aligns with his design featuring tidy hair and youthful male gothic lolita attire. However, a mindset that rigid can only lead to trouble when faced with the unfamiliar.
In this new season, Lily and character A2 seem to adjust comfortably with their environment. However, character 9S remains stubborn and fixated on it. Interestingly, there’s a confrontation between 9S and A2 depicted in the opening scene, but 9S appears disheveled and unkempt compared to his previous pristine look. What’s intriguing is that despite both characters experiencing changes due to their environment, 9S maintains a strict black-and-white moral code, regardless of what his consciousness might suggest to him.
9S appears overly keen to engage in a fatal encounter, but if by chance he becomes aware of an impending attack on Pascal’s village, this could present an opportunity for him to make amends. However, if he remains oblivious to his surroundings and continues blindly, he may only sink further into darkness.
