This article contains major spoilers for Cyberpunk 2077.
While Cyberpunk 2077 features many memorable characters, Judy Alvarez, Panam Palmer, and Rogue Amendiares stand out for driving some of the game’s most impactful storylines. These three characters play key roles in the game’s narrative, and they offer a fresh take on the typical ‘femme fatale’ character often seen in noir fiction.
I’ve always loved how noir games really dig into dark themes – stuff like corruption, where nothing is black and white, and a pretty bleak outlook on people. Cyberpunk 2077 totally nails that vibe. One thing you always expect in noir is the ‘femme fatale’ – that mysterious, dangerous woman. But Cyberpunk 2077 does something really interesting with that trope. Instead of just giving you the classic seductress, they make things way more complicated, which honestly makes the characters and story even more gripping.
The Main Features of a Femme Fatale
- Independence
- Sex appeal
- Dangerous
- Ambitious
- Mysterious
- Opportunistic
- Charming
- Manipulative
- A troubled or traumatic past
Judy Alvarez: Not a Tool
Image via CD Projekt Red I met Judy pretty early on in Cyberpunk 2077 – Evelyn Parker actually introduced us. She’s seriously talented when it comes to braindance editing, but she’s super down-to-earth. What I really respect is that she chooses to stay independent and do her own thing, even though she could easily get a high-paying job with any corporation. She’s just a cool, free spirit.
Judy’s strong independence is a key part of what makes her fit the ‘femme fatale’ archetype. She usually avoids taking on work, but Evelyn’s offer of a life free from jobs is too tempting to resist. Judy wants to escape Night City, and this job feels like her only way out, highlighting her opportunistic side. While female players can develop a romantic relationship with Judy, her sexuality isn’t used to manipulate others; instead, it shows how much she trusts V, which subverts a common trope. Judy’s independence makes her valuable, but she also possesses the sad, vulnerable qualities often found in this character type.
Judy has experienced a lot of loss throughout her life. She was uprooted from her childhood home in Laguna Bend when a company bought it, forcing her family to move to the dangerous city of Night City. After her family left, she was left to fend for herself. Meeting V and becoming involved with Evelyn brought even more tragedy, as a botched heist led to Evelyn’s kidnapping, assault, and ultimately, her suicide, leaving Judy deeply traumatized by her experiences in Night City.
Panam Palmer: Fire Beats Ice
Image via CD Projekt Red You meet Panam in the second act of Cyberpunk 2077. She’s a fiercely independent nomad with a troubled history involving the Aldecaldos clan, and she often acts impulsively. While her quick temper sometimes causes problems, she’s driven by a strong desire to break free from the control of powerful corporations – a difficult goal to achieve in Night City.
She’s a compelling character because of her troubled history, strong need for freedom, and risky job, though she doesn’t perfectly fit the typical ‘femme fatale’ stereotype. Her quick temper shows when she interacts with Rogue, and her difficult relationship with the Aldecaldos – her chosen family – highlights this further. While many femme fatales are cool and collected, her stubbornness and determination still align her with the trope. When a male V romances Panam, the connection feels more emotionally open and honest than what you usually find in classic noir stories, similar to the romance with Judy.
Since Cyberpunk 2077 is a role-playing game, it’s natural for romantic relationships to show how much a character trusts V. However, this approach is a clever twist on the way sex and romance are usually used in noir stories. Typically, those stories use intimacy simply as a tool to achieve a goal, rather than something genuinely heartfelt.
Rogue Amendiares: Right Down the Middle
Image via CD Projekt Red Rogue truly embodies the classic ‘femme fatale’ character more than anyone else in the group. She used to work as a professional mercenary, but now she’s the most respected fixer in Night City. She owns and runs The Afterlife, the popular hangout for fixers and mercenaries, which gives her a lot of control over the city’s criminal underworld. This makes her incredibly powerful, and her mix of drive, ruthlessness, and famous reputation perfectly defines the archetype.
The romantic aspects of the game depend on completing the “Blistering Love” side quest, which involves Johnny Silverhand taking Rogue on a date through V. This storyline leans into the classic noir theme of unattainable love, leaving Rogue feeling somewhat incomplete. If players choose to bring Rogue along for the Arasaka Tower mission, she dies, solidifying her role as a mysterious and tragic character, fitting the archetype of a classic femme fatale.
Why Cyberpunk 2077 Breaking This Stereotype is So Important
Judy, Panam, and Rogue all have qualities often associated with dangerous, alluring women, but they don’t rely on appearance or seduction to get ahead in Night City. Instead, they’ve built their reputations through their own abilities. Judy excels with technology, Panam is tough and resourceful, and Rogue is a master of social influence – and it’s these skills that allow them to thrive.
The women at the heart of Cyberpunk 2077 definitely borrow from the classic ‘femme fatale’ archetype, but they’re updated for a modern audience and the gritty, futuristic world of Night City. Judy, Panam, and Rogue aren’t perfect examples of the trope, and that’s what makes them so compelling and complex.
