Red Dead Redemption 2 is rich with themes and storytelling techniques, creating a narrative that’s about far more than simply being an outlaw in the Wild West.

The characters in Red Dead Redemption 2, like Arthur Morgan, embody the choices, errors, and struggles that can lead people away from doing what’s right. While the game doesn’t favor any specific religion, it clearly explores religious ideas. The story shares similarities with the New Testament, but uses these parallels to examine universal themes found in religious texts, rather than to preach Christianity. There’s a lot of depth and meaning to uncover within the game’s narrative.

The Van der Linde Gang Is Its Own Church

The Van der Linde Gang isn’t just loyal to Dutch; they practically worship him. Long-time members like Arthur, John, and Javier see him as a savior. They repeatedly risk everything – even their families’ safety – based on Dutch’s decisions, despite his constant errors. Essentially, they have unwavering faith in Dutch and what he’s trying to achieve.

Dutch isn’t just a leader, but a spiritual guide, much like Jesus and his apostles. Similar to Jesus, he welcomes everyone, even those society judges, like sex workers, and tries to help them find a better path. However, Dutch’s goals are different. Jesus offered followers a path to God and eternal life, while Dutch promises a different kind of freedom – liberation from the financial, emotional, and psychological burdens of the modern world. He offers a metaphorical kingdom, not a heavenly one.

Dutch and his gang definitely don’t follow a righteous path like religious figures such as Jesus, Moses, or Mohammed. They commit crimes like murder, theft, and loan sharking, and openly defend their actions. This ‘us against them’ attitude and unwavering loyalty, while strong, ultimately leads to the gang’s destruction.

The connection between religious belief and joining a gang is most evident in Orville Swanson. It’s fitting that this former minister, having lost his way, would find a new allegiance with Dutch, essentially replacing one belief system with another.

Religion in Red Dead Redemption 2’s World

While Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t strongly push any particular spiritual viewpoint, it does feature references to religion and organized faith. One example is the appearance of the Ku Klux Klan, a dangerous hate group. The game portrays the Klan as absurdly dogmatic and close-minded, and often mocks their lack of intelligence rather than presenting them as truly frightening.

Similar to Jesus, Dutch welcomes everyone—including people society often judges, like those working in the sex industry—and tries to help them find a better path.

In Red Dead 2, there’s a strange, fictional cult called the Chelonians – they’re obsessed with turtles. The game treats them as a joke, using their unusual beliefs to make fun of them. However, the story takes a darker turn after Arthur meets them. When Arthur tries to separate Jamie, Mary Linton’s brother, from the cult, Jamie attempts suicide, only being stopped by Arthur. He’d rather die than be cut off from the group he considers his family.

Jamie quickly realizes he made mistakes, particularly after a serious conversation with Arthur. However, Arthur’s scolding is ironic, as he often acts like a hypocrite. He criticizes Jamie’s choices, but they closely mirror his own: Arthur risks his life daily for the Van der Linde Gang, and for what? His connection with Mary hints he once had the opportunity for a peaceful life, but he chose to abandon it for his loyalty to Dutch and the gang’s cause.

Sister Calderon, Micah Bell, and the Path to Redemption

Micah Bell is one of the most disliked characters in video games. While he’s generally unpleasant, players and characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 especially despise how he manipulates Dutch, bringing out the worst in him and pushing him toward dangerous choices. Micah is a classic opportunist, always siding with whoever is strongest to benefit himself.

As Micah corrupts the Van der Linde gang, characters like Sister Calderon (who later becomes Mother Superior) offer Arthur Morgan a path toward redemption. Calderon is one of the most direct religious figures in Red Dead Redemption 2, though her advice is surprisingly practical. She tells Arthur that divinity exists within people themselves, emphasizing the importance of helping others. She sees past Arthur’s rough exterior and recognizes his inherent goodness, refusing to let him succumb to self-pity. She even playfully challenges his insistence on being a bad man. Though she doesn’t appear often, Calderon’s conversations with Arthur spark a change in him, and in a playthrough with high honor, this change blossoms into full redemption.

The End of the Gang, and How Arthur Morgan Died for John Marston’s Sins

By the end of Red Dead Redemption 2, Dutch’s carefully constructed image of wisdom and leadership completely falls apart, revealing his cruelty and failings. Left with nothing, Dutch fully commits to his partnership with Micah and embraces villainy. As everything collapses around him, Arthur Morgan secretly gathers money to secure a future for John Marston, whom he sees as a brother. In this moment, Arthur embodies the father figure he always strived to be, fulfilling the purpose suggested by his beliefs, destiny, and the wild west itself – becoming a kind of savior. The game’s outcome – the loss of faith in Dutch and spirituality, the fates of Arthur, Dutch, and the gang, and the end of an era for the American frontier – is all directly tied to how Red Dead 2 explores the power of belief.

Knowing he was already ill with tuberculosis and didn’t have long to live, Arthur sacrifices his life to ensure John, Abigail, and Jack can escape and start over. With the money he helped them earn, John and Abigail finally marry and build a new life for themselves at Beecher’s Hope, a place offering a fresh start. Arthur’s sacrifice gives them a chance at a better, more peaceful life, much like a selfless offering. However, this peace is fragile, and the cycle of violence eventually begins anew.
