Wow, I was so excited when Digimon Story: Time Stranger came out last month – it was a huge hit and everyone was playing! It quickly became one of the best-selling Digimon games ever, and the reviews were amazing. But it’s a little sad to see that the player count has dropped so much – it’s down almost 95% from its peak! I hope the developers can bring players back – it’s such a great game!

Critics generally liked Digimon Story: Time Stranger, giving it scores of 80 on OpenCritic and 78 on Metacritic. However, players loved it even more! User scores are perfect on OpenCritic (100%) and a very high 9.2 on Metacritic, making it the second highest-rated game of the year so far, only slightly behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (9.6).

Fans of Digimon and RPGs were initially very excited about Digimon Story: Time Stranger. However, despite a strong launch last month, the game’s player base has fallen significantly. At its peak, over 84,000 people were playing on Steam, but that number has dropped to around 4,600 in the last day – a decrease of over 94%. While last Sunday saw slightly more players (around 7,600), it still represents a large decline of about 91% since the game’s release.

While the drop is still surprising given all the excitement around the game’s release and its substantial length—especially for completionists—it doesn’t impact the game’s future.

Although Time Stranger has generally been well-received by both players and critics, some controversy surrounding the game may have contributed to a recent decrease in the number of people playing. The game offers Outer Dungeon DLC designed to make progression easier by providing players with experience, gold, and materials they would normally have to earn through extensive gameplay in the base game. However, unlike the positive feedback for the main game, this DLC has received a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam.

Reviews for the Time Stranger Season Pass are also lukewarm, earning a “Mixed” rating which suggests some players might not purchase the new content. The pass costs $29.99 and includes a Golden Moai farm item, as well as access to three future Episode Packs with new Digivolutions and Digimon. Many fans appear disappointed with this DLC and how Time Stranger has approached downloadable content overall, which could impact the game’s long-term success.

Steam Isn’t the Whole Story When It Comes to the Time Stranger Player Count

The recent decrease in players for Time Stranger isn’t the full picture. It’s likely the game has maintained a consistent player base on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, but we don’t have the specific numbers to confirm this. It would be helpful to compare Time Stranger‘s player numbers to those of its competitor, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but Nintendo doesn’t release that data.
