The Assassin’s Creed Series Will Take Place in Ancient Rome, Says Rumor

For almost a decade, Ubisoft and Netflix have been discussing bringing the world of Assassin’s Creed to life through multiple series and films. Now, it looks like those plans are finally becoming a reality.

In 2020, Ubisoft and Netflix announced plans to create both live-action and animated Assassin’s Creed series, but details about any of them remain scarce.

Ubisoft and Netflix have revealed that Toby Wallace, a British-Australian actor, will be the first main cast member in their upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed series. Roberto Patino and David Wiener are the creators and will be leading the show as showrunners.

A recent rumor indicates the upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed series might be set in Ancient Rome.

Ancient Rome in Assassin’s Creed

A source at Nexus Point News reports that the upcoming Netflix series based on Assassin’s Creed will take place in Ancient Rome around 54 C.E. The show will reportedly feature historical characters like Roman Emperor Nero and his teacher, Seneca the Younger.

As a huge fan, I was so excited when Ubisoft and Netflix officially announced back in 2020 that they were teaming up to make a live-action series! It felt like a dream come true, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting it ever since.

The world of Ancient Rome hasn’t been explored much in the Assassin’s Creed games. The only significant visit so far was by Aya, who traveled to Rome in 44 B.C.E. to assassinate Julius Caesar – an event that happened around 100 years before the timeline of the new Netflix series.

Netflix hasn’t shared specific details about the time period or characters in its upcoming series AC. However, Brittany Spurlin mentioned in a recent announcement that the show will feature characters involved in important moments throughout history.

If the rumors are correct, the show might portray a key moment in history: the death of Nero and the end of the Roman dynasty he led. Nero was the last emperor of his family line, and his death led to a period of conflict and civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors.

This setting also gives fans the chance to see Aya’s impact on Ancient Rome, as she decided to stay and establish the Brotherhood there instead of returning to Egypt with Bayek after the events of Origins.
