A gamer showed how they managed to work remotely… from inside the video game The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim! By using some creative tools and in-game items, this fan enjoyed working from beautiful locations all across the game world of Tamriel.
Since its release, Skyrim has been constantly updated and improved with new versions and a huge number of fan-made modifications. One way to experience the game differently is through the virtual reality version, which came out in 2017. This fan cleverly combined their work life with their love for Skyrim.
YouTuber Goes to Work… Inside Skyrim
So, I decided to try something crazy – I wanted to see if I could actually do my job while playing Skyrim. I’m a big VR gamer and regularly stream stuff, so I figured Skyrim VR would be the perfect test. Basically, I launched the game through Steam, and then used the Steam VR overlay to bring up my work stuff – email, Slack, even QuickBooks – right in the game. It was wild! I could be working on something, then just glance around and be totally immersed in the beautiful world of Skyrim while my character kept moving. It actually worked surprisingly well!
Habie147 was looking for a quiet workspace and found his phone too distracting. He first tried camping, but a thief ruined that peaceful spot. After trying a few other places, he found an underground cave lit by glowing mushrooms. However, being underground for too long made him restless, so he moved to a mountaintop. There, he managed to create a beautiful aurora borealis effect. While enjoying the stunning Skyrim VR scenery, he even took a call from a coworker. Although the setup might be distracting for others, Habie147 found it a positive experience, despite the weight of the VR headset after working for a long time. He successfully avoided checking his phone for hours, making the whole challenge a success.
Although virtual reality is still not mainstream, it’s becoming more popular thanks to headsets like the PS VR 2 and Meta Quest, as well as the upcoming Steam Frame. Many gamers are already enjoying VR, or are curious to try it. While some VR games, like Half-Life: Alyx or Fallout 4, might be too immersive for working, there are plenty of calmer environments in games like VR Chat where people could potentially work and play at the same time.
This isn’t the first time someone has blended the world of Skyrim with real life, and surprisingly, previous attempts didn’t even need virtual reality. For instance, one gamer created a mod that let them order pizza and soda through the game using Doordash. They even designed a quest where gathering ingredients in the game triggered a real-life order. By the time the quest was complete, the pizza was delivered! What’s even more interesting is that this isn’t the only Elder Scrolls pizza mod – an older version allowed players to order from Dominos while playing Oblivion.
