New Details About Star Trek's Most Unique Project's Cancellation Come to Light

As a long-time fan of both Star Trek and Quentin Tarantino, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment upon hearing that the R-rated Star Trek film we’ve all been eagerly anticipating will never come to fruition. Having grown up on the gritty, action-packed worlds of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, the idea of Tarantino’s unique storytelling style being applied to the Final Frontier was nothing short of exhilarating.

Star Trek, known for its daring and captivating creative decisions throughout its history, encountered a major alteration in its production strategy that didn’t pan out as planned. Now, fans are privy to behind-the-scenes insights about the actual events that transpired.

Over the years, the Star Trek franchise has endured longer than most others, continuously expanding with new shows following Star Trek: The Original Series. These fresh perspectives on the Federation’s future have kept fans engaged and intrigued. Although the movies were produced sporadically, they eventually became the focal point of the franchise after Paramount rebooted it. After producing three films, the franchise has returned to the era of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Currently, fans are left speculating where the film series will head next, as attention shifts back to television programming.

As a devoted Star Trek fan, I can’t help but reminisce about an exciting prospect that was once in the pipeline. Back when talk of a new TV sitcom for Paramount+ was just a twinkle in their eye, there was a rumored development that could have potentially outshone it all. Following the third installment in the rebooted film series, whispers circulated about a fourth movie slated for 2016. Although the direction of the franchise beyond this point wasn’t clear, what captured everyone’s imagination was the news that legendary Hollywood figure Quentin Tarantino was brainstorming a Star Trek project. Intriguingly, a writer was even assigned to craft a script based on Tarantino’s vision, fueling fans’ anticipation for an R-rated spin on the typically elevated franchise. However, during a recent podcast interview with Bill Maher, Tarantino himself dashed our hopes, revealing that “it’s never going to happen.” He explained that there had been nothing but misinformation about the project, and as someone who avoids social media, he exists in a realm where he doesn’t engage in constant dialogue about his life.

So, if you’re Joe Schlomoka or any sort of passing journalist, when you hear rumors about Quentin making a Star Trek film, a film called The Movie Critic, or anything else for that matter, it’s somewhat similar to the man who wrote the Howard Hughes biography that turned out to be a fraud. The thing is, they can say whatever they want… My point is, they publish these stories in entertainment magazines, and because I’m not well-connected, these stories spread like wildfire across various publications.

Tarantino’s remarks have effectively ruled out the possibility of him directing a Star Trek movie in the future. Mark L. Smith, who penned a script based on Tarantino’s ideas for his proposed Star Trek film, disclosed that the director was concerned about reaching his self-imposed limit of ten films in his career. Known as his “unofficial number of films,” this count includes only feature-length movies and excludes short films and double-counting projects like Kill Bill Volumes I and II. Smith explained, “We were discussing it, and he said, ‘Can I really see Star Trek as my last movie, the final thing I ever do? Is this how I want to end it?’ It seems that was a hurdle he couldn’t overcome, so the script remains on his desk.” Although a Star Trek film by Tarantino might have been intriguing, many believe that a third Kill Bill installment would make a more fitting swan song for him.

Enthusiasts of “Star Trek” may find themselves disappointed in one regard, but they have plenty to anticipate within the franchise. Apart from an upcoming sitcom, there’s a possibility of a fusion between “Star Trek” and “Doctor Who,” with the latter’s showrunner, Russell T. Davies, hinting at the potential for a thrilling science fiction crossover between the two shows. Given enough time, fans might also see that long-awaited R-rated “Trek” movie.

The Star Trek franchise is available to stream on Paramount+.
