The article contains spoilers from One Piece‘s Final Saga.
As a huge One Piece fan, I truly believe the Straw Hats aren’t just the core of the story, they’re probably the most iconic crew ever in manga and anime! It’s amazing to think about how far Luffy and his friends have come over the last twenty-plus years – from the East Blue all the way to the New World, even to the skies and underwater! They’ve overcome incredible obstacles – defeated powerful enemies, overthrown tyrants, challenged a corrupt system, and fought in huge wars. Through it all, they’ve shared so many laughs, tears, victories, and losses. The crew has grown over time, and some members have stepped away briefly, but the Straw Hats have always remained the heart and soul of One Piece.
Luffy leads the crew, but his success is thanks to everyone around him. Likewise, the Straw Hats wouldn’t be where they are today without Luffy, or without each other. They function like a family, allowing them to overcome any obstacle together. They’ve faced incredible danger many times, but they haven’t yet experienced the ultimate tragedy: losing one of their own. Fans have long wondered if a Straw Hat might die, and with the Final Saga approaching, that possibility feels more real. Let’s explore this idea.
How Rumors Of A Straw Hat’s Death Started Spreading
- Some fans claim a Straw Hat would die
- Oda has never made such a claim.
As a huge One Piece fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about what might happen in the Final Saga, and specifically, the possibility of a Straw Hat’s death. Honestly, I’m totally okay with people discussing that! It’s perfectly fine if someone believes a Straw Hat should die – that’s what makes being a fan so fun! One Piece is all about sharing ideas and making theories together. If you have a reason why you think it could happen, that’s awesome – there’s nothing wrong with exploring those possibilities at all.
Most rumors about a Straw Hat Pirate’s death stem from misunderstandings that began around twenty years ago. During the Skypiea arc, Eiichiro Oda did plan a significant death, and a statement he made at the time was later misconstrued. While Oda mentioned a major death for the crew, he never said a crew member would die. He was actually referring to the fate of the Going Merry, which fans consider a beloved member of the Straw Hat family.
Oda has explained that the Going Merry’s destruction was a crucial plot point, ultimately helping the story progress. He originally didn’t plan to eliminate the ship, but realized it was necessary as the crew faced increasingly difficult challenges in the Grand Line.
Originally, I didn’t want to have the Straw Hats leave the Going Merry behind. However, as the enemies became more powerful, I felt it was necessary. – Oda, 2013
The rumor that the author of One Piece plans to kill off a member of the Straw Hat crew is false. Fans already consider the ship, Merry, to be a lost member of the crew, having ‘died’ earlier in the story.
Will A Straw Hat Die In One Piece?
The Death of a Straw Hat Is Highly Unlikely
Now that it’s clear Eiichiro Oda doesn’t plan to kill any of the Straw Hat Pirates, fans are moving on to the question of whether a Straw Hat could die in the story. Essentially, it’s almost certain that no member of the crew will be killed off during the final arc of One Piece.
This is down to the fact that every member of the Straw Hat has their own hopes and dreams.
- Luffy wants to become the Pirate King, and his true dream lies beyond even becoming the Pirate King.
- Zoro wants to become the greatest swordsman in the world.
- Nami wants to draw a map of the whole world.
- Usopp wants to become a brave Warrior of the sea.
- Sanji wants to find the All Blue.
- Chopper wants to become a doctor who can cure all diseases.
- Robin wants to find the true history of the world.
- Franky wants to sail across the oceans of the world on his ship of dreams.
- Brook wants to reunite with Laboon.
- Finally, Jinbe is there to make Luffy the Pirate King, and his eventual dream is to see the Fishman kind flourish, which he believes is only possible with Luffy.
Each member of the Straw Hat Pirates has personal dreams they hope to achieve. These dreams will only be fully realized at the very end of the One Piece story, suggesting that none of the characters will die before getting the chance to fulfill them.
Fans often suggest a character could die after achieving their goal. However, Oda has hinted against this, explaining he dislikes killing off characters because it limits his storytelling options. He feels it would be particularly difficult to kill a Straw Hat, as it would negate all of Luffy’s hard work and essentially undo everything he’s fought for – making it nearly impossible for him to do.
Why Oda Hates Killing Off Characters
Oda Wants To Draw Big Parties
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has a good reason for avoiding character deaths. He deeply cares about his story and wants to balance serious, even dark, moments with a hopeful outlook. He envisions finishing each major story arc with celebrations and joyful gatherings.
Oda explains he avoids drawing death scenes because he envisions One Piece ending with a massive celebratory party. He believes a joyful party is impossible if characters have died, as he sees parties as the ultimate expression of friendship and wants that to be the final image of his series.
If characters died frequently, Eiichiro Oda wouldn’t be able to create the large-scale celebrations he envisions for One Piece, and the series would become much darker – the opposite of his intention. Oda has explicitly stated he wants the story to conclude with a grand party, strongly suggesting that none of the Straw Hat crew will die. If a Straw Hat were to die, Luffy wouldn’t be able to celebrate, and he’s already made it clear he’s done with losing loved ones. While the idea of a Straw Hat’s death might be compelling to some, it simply won’t happen.
