Steam, Valve’s online marketplace launched in 2003, has become a leading gaming platform with millions of players worldwide. Valve has officially announced its entry into the console market with the Steam Machine, launching in early November. So, I was watching Linus Tech Tips the other day, and he did a deep dive into what the Steam Machine might cost. He basically built a PC with the same specs Valve listed for the Steam Machine to figure out the parts cost. He came up with around $602 for Valve, but that doesn’t factor in how prices have gone up over time. Linus thinks, considering Valve’s cost is around $600, we’ll probably see the Steam Machine priced at about $699 when it finally comes out. Valve said they’ll officially announce the price next year, closer to the release, which is planned for the first quarter of 2026.

The Steam Machine Could Be a Major Home Console Competitor

If the Steam Machine were to sell for $700, it would be a strong competitor to established consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, despite being a bit more expensive. A new PlayStation 5 usually costs around $550, and the digital Xbox Series X starts at $600. At $700, the Steam Machine would only be about $100 to $150 more expensive than those main consoles.

The Steam Machine is generating excitement before its launch, thanks to its price and the huge number of games it will likely offer. Linus Tech Tips called the $700 console a great value, praising its build quality. Valve is better prepared for this console release than they were in 2015, having successfully launched the Steam Deck in 2023 and continued to improve it. A key advantage for the Steam Machine will be its access to nearly the entire Steam game library.

The Steam Machine offers similar performance to other consoles, but its biggest advantage is access to the vast library of PC games. For the first time, popular PC-only titles like Project Zomboid and Garry’s Mod will be playable on a console.
