Now that Thanksgiving is over and we’re all starting to feel normal again, the holiday gaming season is still in full swing! Luckily, the upcoming free games on the Epic Games Store will give you plenty to play – and talk about – with friends and family this month.
Even though they came out almost ten years ago, the free games available on the Epic Games Store starting December 4th are still great options for the holidays. One game perfectly captures the lively energy of family gatherings, while the other offers a peaceful escape – a perfect combination for this time of year.
Epic Games Store Free Games for December 4–11: Jackbox Party Pack 4
The Perfect Game for Holiday Extroverts Who Thrive in Social Settings
- Released in October 2017
- Developed by Jackbox Games
- Retail price: $24.99
- Top Critic Average on OpenCritic: 78

- Most games are designed with 3–8 players in mind
Since 2014, the Jackbox Party Packs have become a go-to for get-togethers. Only one person needs to own the game, and then up to eight (or even more!) players can join in using their phones or tablets. The games are a fun mix of challenges with easy-to-learn rules and controls, so anyone can play, even if they don’t usually play video games.
The Epic Games Store is giving away Jackbox Party Pack 4 for free on December 4th. While it’s not the most popular pack, it’s a great option for holiday gatherings with family and friends. This pack includes five fun party games: Fibbage 3, Survive the Internet, Monster Seeking Monster, Bracketeering, and Civic Doodle.
- Fibbage is a Jackbox classic, requiring players to answer trivia questions and insert their own deceptive answers.
- Survive the Internet is a highly satirical rumor-based game.
- Monster Seeking Monster is a tongue-in-cheek “dating” game.
- Bracketeering is essentially a tournament version of Quiplash, where the goal is to create the funniest answer.
- Civic Doodle is a drawing game where players vote on each other’s art.
Like all the Jackbox Party Packs, this one, Party Pack 4, is seriously replayable. I know I’ll be pulling it out whenever friends and family are around the holidays – it’s guaranteed to give us a few hours of laughs. It’s perfect if you’ve got a group who likes to be social and have a good time!
Epic Games Store Free Games for December 4–11: The Darkside Detective
The Perfect Game for Holiday Introverts Who Need to Recharge Their Social Battery
- Released in July 2017
- Developed by Spooky Doorway
- Retail price: $14.99
- Top Critic Average on OpenCritic: 76
- A point-and-click adventure game set in the city of Twin Lakes
- A satirical tone with a ton of pop-culture references
Look, I love hanging out with my family and friends, but sometimes you just need some alone time to recharge, you know? For me, that usually means diving into a good video game. And honestly, The Darkside Detective is perfect for those times when I just want to chill by myself and get lost in a story – it’s exactly what I need after a lot of socializing.
This week, Epic Games Store is offering The Darkside Detective as a free game. It’s a classic point-and-click adventure with a unique sense of humor and a retro pixel art style, reminiscent of beloved games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle from the 1990s. You play as Detective Francis McQueen, who investigates strange, supernatural crimes as part of the Darkside Division of the police.
Akupara Games, who recently gave away the free game Universe for Sale on the Epic Games Store, also published The Darkside Detective. Both games are unique and visually interesting point-and-click adventures.
Okay, so this game, The Darkside Detective, has this really cool thing going on – it’s got a spooky mirror world, kind of like the Upside Down in Stranger Things, that you explore while solving mysteries. There are nine different cases in total, and honestly, they’re all pretty funny and packed with little nods to other stuff. But if you’re looking for something perfect to play by yourself around the holidays, you HAVE to check out the ‘Buy Hard’ case. You play as Detective McQueen and you’re basically hunting down the Krampus – it’s a blast!
