2025 has been an amazing year for anime so far! Fans have enjoyed fantastic shows like Solo Leveling and The Apothecary Diaries, with more hits like My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Lord of Mysteries, and Dandadan following close behind.

As the year draws to a close, many anime fans are reflecting on which series provided the most entertainment. While action-packed ‘shonen’ anime often dominate, 2025 saw a strong comeback for mature ‘seinen’ titles, specifically ‘Kingdom’ and ‘Grand Blue’. Both offered truly exceptional viewing experiences.

Kingdom’s Sixth Season Is Almost Flawless

The sixth season of Yasuhisa Hara’s Kingdom anime premiered in October 2025, after a long wait from fans eager to follow Xin’s continuing journey. While anime aimed at older audiences (seinen) often don’t reach as many viewers as those for younger audiences (shonen), Kingdom has proven to be a major exception.

Kingdom is a very popular series – it’s hardly unknown, especially considering the manga has sold over 100 million copies. With so many fans, it quickly became a major topic of conversation on social media.

The sixth season of Kingdom centers around two main storylines: the resolution of the long-running Bureaucrats Job arc and the beginning of the Western Zhao Invasion arc. After wrapping up the Bureaucrats storyline, the season shifted its focus to the new conflict. The season has been very popular with fans, who have praised Studio Signpost’s work on it. While the season isn’t finished yet, viewers expect the high quality to continue until the end.

Besides Kingdom, Grand Blue was also a strong candidate for the best seinen anime. The show recently made a comeback after being off the air for over five years. While Grand Blue is known for its comedy, it’s more than just silly fun. It also explores meaningful topics like friendship and overcoming challenges.

Anime Studios Needs To Remake Old Seinen Classics

For a long time, action-packed “shonen” anime have been the most popular and profitable in the anime world. While many shonen series are excellent and easy to sell, there’s a growing desire to see more mature “seinen” anime get the spotlight. A surge in seinen adaptations would be fantastic for many stories, and Kentaro Miura’s Berserk would be one of the biggest winners.

Most fans agree that the 1997 anime adaptation of Berserk, made by OLM Team Iguchi, is the best. It perfectly captured the spirit of the story and was incredibly captivating. When several studios attempted a new adaptation in 2016, the use of CGI proved unpopular and caused many fans to lose interest.

It’s disappointing that no other animation studios are attempting to adapt the Berserk manga. The series is incredibly popular with fans worldwide and consistently ranks as the top manga on MyAnimeList, even surpassing titles like One Piece, Steel Ball Run, and Hunter x Hunter. Considering its widespread appeal, it’s surprising that a well-known studio such as MAPPA or Madhouse hasn’t taken on the project.

Like many mature anime series, Tokyo Ghoul suffered from poor adaptation choices by the studio. While the first two seasons were well-received, the quality dropped significantly afterward. Important plot points were skipped, which disappointed fans and diminished the series’ overall impact. Many fans are still hoping for a remake, but Studio Pierrot hasn’t given any sign that one is in development.
