One Piece: Oda Finally Sets Up Imu’s Devil Fruit Reveal

This article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga.

The popular manga and anime series One Piece is now in its final story arc, and the author, Oda, is revealing a lot about the main villain, Imu. Imu is incredibly powerful, and this has become especially clear in the current Elbaf arc. A recent flashback showed Imu’s abilities at God Valley, leading fans to believe they are currently the strongest character in the series.

In One Piece Chapter 1167, creator Eiichiro Oda seems to have given fans their first clue about what kind of Devil Fruit power Imu has. It looks like Imu’s abilities are connected to the Sea Devil, and he could even be that very being.

One Teases Imu’s Sea Devil Powers In Chapter 1167

Chapter 1167 of One Piece introduced King Harald and his acceptance as a Holy Knight. Because of his immense power, he received a special seal from the Five Elders – and this seal is the source of the great power wielded by both the Holy Knights and the Elders themselves. As fans already suspected, this power ultimately comes from Imu, who is shown to be the one granting these abilities.

Allow Mu to show thee the dominance of a God! — Saint Imu Nerona, One Piece

While the entire power of the seal was not revealed to the fans in One Piece chapter 1167, what was quite clear was the naming pattern of the seals. All the seals of Imu are inspired by the ocean itself. In other words, Imu’s powers are connected to the deep sea. Each seal is based on a particular level of depth. The deeper the sea, the stronger the power that they get from Imu. Given that fans already know that Imu is a devil, this quite clearly implies that Imu’s powers are those of the Sea Devil itself.

Imu’s Seal Has Three Sea Levels

In One Piece chapter 1167, it’s become clear that Imu’s seal isn’t fully understood. We now know the seal has three layers. The first, and most common, layer – called the Shallow Sea Seal – is given to individuals like Shanks and Harald by Imu and the Five Elders, as shown in the latest chapter.

I’ve learned about the Deep Sea seal, and it’s significantly more powerful than the Shallow Sea seal. It seems to grant incredibly dangerous abilities – things like immortality, or even powers associated with devils. I’m guessing that only very powerful characters, like high-ranking Holy Knights and perhaps even some of the Elders, would be able to handle this kind of power.

Mu shall grant thee immeasurable strength and an undying body. — Imu

The most powerful seal is located in the deepest part of the ocean, known as the Abyssal Seal. While its exact abilities are unknown, it’s likely that the powers of figures like the Five Elders – including their control over Yokai – or even Imu herself, originate from this powerful seal.

Imu’s Power Of The Sea Devil Will Be Tied To The Earth God

It’s now strongly suggested that Imu is actually the Sea Devil. Their abilities seem to originate from the ocean’s depths, and it appears Imu is unaffected by water – possibly making them the only character in One Piece whose Devil Fruit power doesn’t cause them to sink. This idea is reinforced by the fact that Imu wields the power of the Abyss, and the process of controlling someone with Domi Reversi requires them to be submerged in the Abyss and become Imu’s slave.

Although Imu is almost certainly the ‘Sea Devil,’ it’s important to distinguish that from the established ‘Sea God’ in One Piece, who is already known to be Poseidon and wielded by Shirahoshi. Instead of being a god of the sea, Imu will likely be the ‘Earth God,’ meaning they control all of nature, including the oceans. This control over nature is what gives them the title of ‘Sea Devil.’
