Megumi Fushiguro is a significant and beloved character within the anime titled “Jujutsu Kaisen“. Among the show’s many captivating figures, Megumi stands out as one of the brightest stars. Interestingly enough, he is frequently regarded as the second most popular character in the series, following Gojo.

Yet, it’s undeniable that Megumi has been unfairly treated in the storyline. For instance, during the Culling Game Arc, he was possessed by Sukuna and since then, his role has been limited to serving as a host for the King of Curses. This development seems to have stalled his character growth and the promise of him having personal goals. Regrettably, this situation is unfortunate, but at least Megumi is still alive, as fans witnessed Yuji release him from the grasp of the King of Curses in a recent episode.

In the Culling Game Arc, Ryomen Sukuna seized Megumi’s body due to an arrangement established early in the series. This pact stipulated that Yuji would be resurrected by Sukuna using his reverse cursed technique. In return, Yuji consented to give Sukuna temporary control of his body for a minute after he said the word “Enchain.” Sukuna vowed not to harm his friends during this period, and thus, a deal was forged between them. Although Yuji had no recollection of this agreement, it was this binding oath that revived him.

During the Culling Game Arc, Sukuna saw his chance to possess Megumi Fushiguro and seized it. Left shattered, Yuji was powerless against Megumi’s takeover, even as he fought back with all his might. However, the young Zenin family member could not withstand Sukuna’s control, especially when the bath was used to subdue him. With this change, Sukuna reached the zenith of his strength. To add insult to injury, in battles, Sukuna held a significant edge due to having access not only to his own powers but also Megumi’s 10 Shadows Technique.

It was clear to fans that the one to eventually subdue Gojo would be the show’s protagonist, Yuji Itadori. Naturally, the lead-up to this confrontation unfolded gradually, but it did culminate as anticipated. Amidst this battle, Yuji experienced significant growth.

Apart from mastering a complex skill like the reverse cursed technique, he simultaneously became proficient in barrier techniques, showcasing them during his battle with Sukuna. Simultaneously, it was disclosed that Yuji had also acquired two inherent abilities. Initially, he could manipulate blood after consuming Death Paintings numbers 4 to 9. Furthermore, it was made known that being a vessel for Sukuna yielded benefits, as he gained control over the Shrine technique, which seemed to be etched into his body.
All these powers put together made Yuji incredibly strong and worthy of fighting Sukuna. Furthermore, Yuji’s ability to deal damage to the soul played a great part here, and it certainly helped free Megumi from Sukuna’s clutches. He also delivered one powerful Black Flash after another in his fight against the King of Curses, and it was simply too much for Sukuna to put up with. Despite being the strongest, Sukuna was not able to withstand the incredible effort put in by Yuji, and eventually, he crumbled when Yuji opened his magnificent domain.

After Yuji unveiled his extraordinary realm, spectators knew the fight against Sukuna was drawing to a close. Within this domain, Yuji saw an impressive increase in his stats, and he wielded a formidable one-hit attack. Despite Sukuna’s power, he struggled under the mounting pressure Yuji applied. Even when they squared off for hand-to-hand combat, Sukuna was left reeling. It came as no surprise that Yuji was in peak form within his domain, especially since he is the central character of the series.
1. Consequently, Megumi’s efforts enabled Yuji to gain an edge, as Megumi began to retaliate against Sukuna, preventing a counter-attack. In the end, Nobara stepped in, creating an opening for Yuji to strike his decisive blow. By channeling a powerful resonance, Nobara weakened the King of Curses, allowing Yuji to launch his strongest black flash right at the core of the King of Curses, causing him to be hurled backward and effectively stopping him momentarily.
In the midst of chaos, Sukuna barreled into Yuji’s territory, smashing through several structures along the way. Simultaneously, Megumi broke free from Sukuna’s grip, leaving behind only a puddle of goo – the remains of the Curse King. For the first time, Sukuna understood his own worthlessness compared to Yuji. As Yuji stood above him, this intense battle seemed to culminate.
In contrast, Megumi awoke, indicating he had made a full recovery. This suggests that several days, if not weeks, have already elapsed since then. Now, fans can rejoice knowing Megumi is safe. Yet, his return brings a tinge of sadness as all his untapped potential seems to have been squandered. The opportunity for Megumi’s character growth has essentially passed, leaving behind unrealized abilities and storylines that the author, Gege, could have explored. It’s tragic that a character as significant as Megumi Fushiguro never truly reached his full potential in the series, but at least fans can be content with him surviving the final battle.
