In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players can now catch the legendary Pokemon Mewtwo. Completing the special Side Mission, Project M, will also reward you with both of Mewtwo’s Mega Evolution Stones: Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y.
To begin the special mission that lets you encounter Mewtwo, you’ll first need to finish the main story of Pokemon Legends: Z-A and see the credits. This guide will walk you through starting the mission and getting the items needed to evolve your Pokemon. Let’s dive in!
How to Get Mewtwo (and Mewtwonite X/Y) in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Starting Project M
After finishing Pokemon Legends: Z-A, open the menu by pressing the X button and select Link Play. Then, choose Mystery Gift and Get Via Internet. Selecting Project M will unlock a new side quest and instantly give you both Mega Evolution Stones for Mewtwo: Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y.
The game doesn’t tell you how to begin Project M, but don’t worry, we can help! Simply open your map and fast travel to Lysandre Cafe, which is located just outside the main area.
Go inside Lysandre Labs, then take the red elevator. Choose floor B3F. When you enter the main room, a cutscene will start. If you choose to unlock things, a trainer will appear and challenge you to a battle.
After you win the battle, you can try to catch the Pokémon with any Poké Ball you like. If you fail, the battle will begin again, giving you another opportunity. We were able to catch it using an Ultra Ball on our second attempt.
Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Pokémon appearing at level 70. It’s vulnerable to Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks. Its moveset includes Psychic, Psycho Cut, Amnesia, and Aura Sphere.
What’s the Difference Between Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y?
In Pokemon Legends Z-A, Mega Mewtwo X becomes a Psychic and Fighting-type Pokemon, known for its incredibly powerful attack stat and strong performance in battles. Mega Mewtwo Y remains a Psychic-type, focusing on high speed and special attack, but it’s fragile with low defense – a classic glass cannon.
