Eidos-Montreal, the team behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and known for their work on games like Tomb Raider, has recently reduced its staff.
Several former employees recently used LinkedIn to share that they had left the company.
Gameplay director Samuel Daher shared that he enjoyed his time at Eidos and would have remained if circumstances hadn’t changed. He simply stated, “Hey there! Was working at Eidos, loved it and would have stayed, but times are difficult.”
At least a dozen people have now lost their jobs, marking the second round of layoffs at the studio this year. In March, 75 employees were let go, reportedly because temporary contracts had finished.
It’s unlikely the recent layoffs are over. Several sources have told TopMob that most projects at Eidos-Montreal have been cancelled. The studio is now prioritizing games it’s developing with Microsoft and Xbox, such as Grounded 2 and Fable. Additionally, an internal project that began in 2019 is reportedly facing financial difficulties and isn’t expected to become profitable.
After those projects wrap, however, “additional staff reductions are already forecasted.”
I’ve been trying to get a word from Eidos-Montreal and Embracer (their parent company) about this, but haven’t heard anything back yet. Honestly, Embracer doesn’t usually comment on things like layoffs or what’s going on with their games internally, so I wasn’t expecting much.
I’m really curious to see what Eidos-Montreal does next! I’d love to hear what everyone else thinks the future holds for them. If you want to chat about it with other fans, come join us on the official TopMob Discord server – it’s a great place to share your thoughts!
