Early reviews for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are coming in, and it appears to be the lowest-rated game in the Metroid Prime series. This might be disappointing for fans, especially considering how long they waited for the game – it was so delayed that it became a running joke among gamers. Despite being the most eagerly awaited Metroid Prime title, critics haven’t been overwhelmingly positive about it.
I’m so excited for Metroid Prime 4! A few lucky fans already have their copies, but the rest of us will get to play on December 4th. It’s been a long wait – ever since it was first announced way back in 2017, before the Switch even came out and when E3 was still a thing! The Metroid Prime games are classics, so there’s a lot riding on this new one. Honestly, the early reviews are a little worrying – it doesn’t seem like it’s quite hitting the mark some of us were hoping for.
All Mainline Metroid Prime Games by Metacritic Score
| Game | Metacritic Average Score |
|---|---|
| Metroid Prime | 97 |
| Metroid Prime 2: Echoes | 92 |
| Metroid Prime 3: Corruption | 90 |
| Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | 81 |
As of today, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has a score of 81 on Metacritic, based on 64 reviews. This makes it the lowest-rated main installment in the Metroid Prime series. While 81 is still a good score, it’s a significant decrease from previous games – nine points lower than Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. The game’s score could still improve as more reviews are published, but many fans are disappointed by the score, especially after waiting 18 years for a new Metroid Prime title.
Nintendo Metroid Prime Remastered has received a 94 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest-rated games in the series – slightly below the original Metroid Prime, but better than all other games in the franchise.
The latest game, Metroid Prime 4, follows a pattern seen throughout the Metroid Prime series: each new release has generally received lower average scores than the last. As expected, the original Metroid Prime remains the highest-rated game. Many fans also believe that Metroid Prime Remastered, released in 2023, is actually the best game in the series.
Beyond the core Metroid games, Metroid Prime 4 currently receives higher scores than some spin-offs. While Metroid Prime Hunters scored an 85, Metroid Prime Pinball and Metroid Prime: Federation Force earned 79 and 64 respectively, based on critic reviews. User reviews aren’t available yet, but early indications suggest they’ll likely be similar to the critic scores. Some previewers found the game’s companion character irritating, which is a concern for fans, but it’s hard to predict how the general public will react until the game is widely released.
Nintendo Players will soon be able to form their own opinions about the game. There’s also talk that development of Metroid Prime 5 could start shortly, but it’s far too soon to guess what it will be like or how people will react. Hopefully, the next game won’t take as long to release as the one before it, but Metroid fans can still enjoy Metroid Prime 4, even though it hasn’t received as much praise as earlier games.
