Why Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Might Be Bad for Hogwarts Legacy 2

Why Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Might Be Bad for Hogwarts Legacy 2

As a dedicated Harry Potter fan who grew up dreaming of playing Quidditch in Hogwarts, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy might miss out on this beloved sport due to the success of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.

Although an official sequel for Hogwarts Legacy hasn’t been announced yet, given the extraordinary achievement of the Wizarding World video game adaptation from last year, it seems highly probable that a follow-up will be produced eventually. When the time arrives to develop the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, there might be certain aspects that need refinement or enhancement in comparison to the original game design; however, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions could have already taken the lead in one significant aspect.

Slated for launch on September 3, the multiplayer game titled “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions” focuses around the thrilling sport from the enchanting world of Harry Potter. Judging by its pre-release trailers, it appears that “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions” is developing quite well, and its inclusion in PlayStation Plus’ Essential tier on its release day should give it a strong start. However, if “Quidditch Champions” proves to be successful, there’s a higher chance that the sequel to “Hogwarts Legacy“, i.e., “Hogwarts Legacy 2“, may not feature Quidditch.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Could Limit Hogwarts Legacy 2’s Minigames

Quidditch Was Sorely Missed in Hogwarts Legacy

Although Hogwarts Legacy successfully brought to life the AAA open-world RPG of the Wizarding World that fans have longed for, it wasn’t without its flaws. There were certain aspects missing within Hogwarts Legacy, and the absence of Quidditch was a significant disappointment for many supporters. Despite the game’s flight mechanics working exceptionally well, there was widespread belief that Quidditch would be incorporated into Hogwarts Legacy through an update or DLC post-release. Unfortunately, these expectations were not met.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 Might Miss Out on Quidditch As Well

Fans of the game Hogwarts Legacy, disappointed by its absence of playable Quidditch, eagerly anticipate a dedicated Quidditch game like Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Judging from the trailers released thus far, it appears that Quidditch Champions will provide a rich and immersive experience in Quidditch, allowing players to select one of four unique roles within a team, such as Chaser or Seeker. Additionally, players can customize their characters with cosmetics they’ve earned through gameplay victories.

The game titled “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions” isn’t being marketed as a continuous live-service, but instead is adopting a seasonal strategy. Starting from Winter 2024, the first season will introduce events such as the Yule Ball and “Holiday at Hogwarts.” This implies that Warner Bros. anticipates the game’s long-term success, which might explain why they wouldn’t want to disrupt this success by releasing a potential sequel, Hogwarts Legacy 2, featuring Quidditch, and thereby dividing the fanbase.

There’s a bit of overlap between the upcoming game, Hogwarts Legacy, and Quidditch Champions. The new game will reward players who have played Hogwarts Legacy with special in-game items. Additionally, a themed event based on Hogwarts Legacy is planned for the launch season of Quidditch Champions.

How Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Still Use Quidditch

Though it would be a tricky business decision to include Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy 2 when Warner Bros. has an ongoing game already dedicated to the sport, there are ways Hogwarts Legacy 2 could adapt the sport without making it feel too similar to Quidditch Champions‘ version. A good compromise is giving players a set of Quidditch-themed trials to work through in Hogwarts Legacy 2, such as racing another Seeker for the Golden Snitch, or hitting Bludgers away with a Beater’s bat, imitating the sport without directly copying Quidditch Champions‘ formula.
