Jujutsu Kaisen: How Gege Failed With Yuji’s Domain Expansion

Jujutsu Kaisen: How Gege Failed With Yuji's Domain Expansion

As a die-hard Jujutsu Kaisen fan who has been following this series since its inception, I must admit that Yuji Itadori’s domain expansion left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. While I appreciated the effort Gege put into creating unique domains for each character, Yuji’s felt like it was missing something essential – flair!

This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 268.

The thrilling showdown between the King of Curses, Sukuna, and the main character Yuji from “Jujutsu Kaisen” has just concluded. This battle was a real treat for viewers, although it may not have reached the heights of the confrontation between Gojo and Sukuna, it was still a nail-biting fight that had fans anxiously waiting each week to see what would happen next.

In the finale of the battle, the main character, Yuji from Jujutsu Kaisen, successfully grew his domain and achieved an extraordinarily powerful level of strength. This battle between the two monsters concluded within Yuji’s domain, with him ultimately being the winner. Yet, despite Yuji’s significant victory, his domain expansion continues to be a topic of much discussion, as it fell short in various aspects.

Yuji Itadori Gains A Domain Expansion During His Fight Against Sukuna

  • Yuji Learned Berries Techniques
  • Yuji Awakened The Shrine Technique

During his battle against Sukuna, Yuji Itadori developed the ability to expand his domain. However, the foundation for this skill was established much earlier in the story. To create a domain expansion, one must possess a high level of skill in barrier techniques. This expertise in barriers was developed by Yuji during the brief gap between the Culling Game and the Shinjuku Showdown Arc. During this period, thanks to Ui Ui’s technique, Yuji managed to swap bodies with two different individuals within a month. One of these swaps was with Yuta Okkotsu, while the other was with Kusakabe. It was from Kusakabe that Yuji learned many barrier techniques, including the Simple Domain. With this understanding and practice of barriers, Yuji had attained enough strength to develop abilities such as domain expansion, and he also acquired the necessary knowledge to create and utilize this specific skill.

Domain Expansion! – Yuji Itadori

For Yuji Itadori to expand his domain, he needed a potent Innate Technique, but his control over Blood Manipulation wasn’t sufficient during the timeskip when he consumed Death Paintings 4 to 9 and awakened the ability. Consequently, creating a Blood Domain was impossible for him. However, after Yuji clashed with the King of Curses and experienced a Black Flash, he unlocked the Shrine Technique inscribed within his body, as hinted at the start of the story. This breakthrough proved crucial when Yuji used this powerful attack successfully.

When Yuji Itadori infused his Shrine ability into his protective space, he created an expansive Shrine Domain. Regrettably, the name of this domain remains unknown to fans, and many still ponder over its functioning mechanism.

Yuji Vs Sukuna Inside The Domain

Yuji Overpowered Sukuna With Brute Strength

Fans have learned that Yuji Itadori becomes significantly stronger within his personal battlefield, known as his domain. During the fight against Sukuna, fans witnessed this strength in action. As a fundamental rule of Domain Expansion, it enhances the user considerably. This is due to the fact that they are essentially battling on their home ground. The expansion of domains serves to amplify all of the user’s stats. In Yuji’s case, this meant he was able to strike harder, faster, and more frequently within his Domain Expansion, putting Sukuna at a disadvantage. This is the primary benefit of Yuji’s domain expansion that fans have observed so far.

That’s right, Sukuna! Release Fushiguro, return to me, and I’ll spare your life! – Yuji

Within the realm, spectators witnessed an unusual collection of scenes. Somehow, Yuji managed to display places from his recollections to Sukuna. These memories appeared authentic, and as per Sukuna’s explanation, this was unlike their usual connection on a spiritual plane.

Despite it still being a mystery today, Yuji attempted to stir any human feelings in Sukuna by displaying scenes from his childhood. Essentially, this was Yuji’s last attempt to persuade Sukuna to retreat and rejoin him. If not, Yuji made it clear he would be forced to fight him. Alas, Sukuna declined his offer, initiating the climactic battle within the domain.

As Yujii Itadori versus Sukuna began inside the domain, fans felt that this was a battle that would deliver upon the incredibly high expectations. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Yuji’s battle against Sukuna inside the domain was somewhat lackluster. Even though he managed to deal deadly damage to Sukuna inside, delivering one powerful blow after another, Yuji ended up requiring help from the likes of Megumi, and at the same time, in the end, Nobara as well. All three characters essentially combined to take down the King of Curses, and what’s more, Yuji eventually finished the battle with a Black Flash inside his domain.

Why Yuji’s Domain Expansion Was Lackluster

Yuji’s Domain Powers Were Not Elaborated Upon

In Yuji Itadori’s case, his domain lacked excitement as viewers were unclear about its function beyond enhancing his physical abilities. Inside the domain, all Yuji managed to do was deliver more powerful and damaging blows against Sukuna. Regrettably, there were no additional capabilities or techniques from Yuji that were showcased within his domain. Fans had hoped to learn the name of the domain and witness stronger skills from him, but unfortunately, this did not materialize.

Fans have expressed disappointment about Yuji’s domain because they didn’t get to witness his Sure Hit Technique, which many expected due to its significance in domain expansions. Although Yuji incorporated the Shrine technique into his domain, he didn’t use it against Sukuna within his domain. This was a crucial move that fans were anticipating. The Sure Hit attacks are a defining feature of domain expansions and provide a significant advantage. This omission suggests that the creator (Gege) may not have fully delivered on an ideal domain expansion, as demonstrated by Gojo early in the series.

Yuji’s domain lacked the grandeur found in Sukuna Malevolent Shrine or the overwhelming power of Gojo’s Unlimited Void. Unlike these domains, which were initially praised for their artistic quality and ability to instill fear in enemies, Yuji’s domain only served to enhance his basic abilities. This seems to be where it fell short.

The fact that fans didn’t even get to know the name of his domain expansion or how the technique imbued in the domain even works paints quite a picture of why this Domain Expansion failed to deliver the impact that fans had expected.
