PlayStation is letting players enjoy online multiplayer for many of their purchased games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and EA Sports FC 26, without a PS Plus subscription for a limited time this weekend. Usually, a PS Plus membership is required to play online multiplayer on PS4 and PS5 unless the game is free-to-play, but PlayStation is temporarily lifting that requirement for everyone.
PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) launched during the PlayStation 3 era and has become a key service for PlayStation. It’s changed a lot over the years, and now offers three different subscription levels: Essential, Extra, and Premium. The Essential tier is the basic plan, costing $9.99 a month and providing access to online multiplayer, cloud saves, and a few free games each month. Those who subscribe to Extra or Premium get everything in Essential, plus even more benefits. The biggest perk of the higher tiers is the Game Catalog, which lets you play a large library of games without buying them individually—similar to Xbox Game Pass.
PlayStation is offering a free online multiplayer weekend from December 6th to 7th, letting players enjoy online games without a PlayStation Plus subscription. Normally, you need PS Plus to play games like Call of Duty or EA Sports FC online, even if you own them. This requirement doesn’t affect PC gamers, but Xbox players need Xbox Game Pass for online play. However, free-to-play games like Apex Legends and Fortnite are always playable online without a subscription.
Five PS4 and PS5 Multiplayer Games to Play This Weekend

- Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 (PS4, PS5)
- EA Sports FC 26 (PS4, PS5)
- Grand Theft Auto Online (PS4, PS5)
- ARC Raiders (PS5)
- Elden Ring Nightreign (PS4, PS5)
As a gamer, I’m super excited about this weekend! If you’re like me and have a bunch of online multiplayer games gathering dust but don’t want to pay for PlayStation Plus right now, this is the perfect chance to jump back in. You still need to own the games, of course, but there’s so much good stuff out there! With new releases like Black Ops 7 – which everyone’s saying is amazing as always with its fast-paced action – and popular titles still going strong, I’m spoiled for choice. I’ve also been hearing great things about ARC Raiders, the new third-person shooter from the team behind The Finals. It seems like the perfect game to play with friends this weekend, and I can’t wait to try it out!
Longtime PlayStation fans will probably recognize this promotion – PlayStation Plus often offers free weekends around this time of year. While PlayStation hasn’t shared details on how well these weekends perform, it’s clear they’re meant to encourage people to sign up for a full PlayStation Plus subscription when the weekend ends. It’s important to remember, however, that this free weekend doesn’t unlock everything PlayStation Plus offers – features like the game catalog, monthly games, and cloud storage are still part of the paid subscription.
If you decide to subscribe to PlayStation Plus after trying out the free online multiplayer weekend, you’ll get access to a lot of other benefits. PlayStation has had a fantastic December, surprising players with five free games instead of the usual three. Normally, subscribers get three games each month to keep as long as their subscription is active, but PlayStation added two extra games as a holiday treat. You can claim Killing Floor 3, LEGO Horizon Adventures, Neon White, Synduality: Echo of Ada, and The Outlast Trials now through January 6th if you’re a PS Plus member.
