How to Start Project M & Catch Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Pokémon Legends: Z-A recently added Mewtwo to the game, but you can only battle this powerful legendary Pokémon by finishing the ‘Project M’ side quest.

So, they dropped Mewtwo into Legends: Z-A with the December 2nd update, and it even came with both of its Mega Evolution forms! It’s cool because this is the second time they’ve added a Pokémon after launch – Diancie was the first one. It’s awesome seeing them keep the game fresh with new additions like this.

Having trouble figuring out how to begin the Project M side quest in Pokémon Legends: Z-A? TopMob has a complete guide to help you get started.

How to Start Project M in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Before you begin the main story, Project M, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, make sure to get two Mewtwo Mega Stones as a free gift through the game’s system.

You can get these gifts whenever you want, but you need to finish the main story before you can start the Project M side mission.

This is done by following these steps:

  1. Open the Main Menu (X on your Switch console).
  2. Select ‘Link Play’.
  3. Choose the ‘Mystery Gift’ option.
  4. Select ‘Get via Internet’ or ‘Check Mystery Gifts’.
  5. The system will check that you are connected to the internet.
  6. Select the reward you wait to receive.

After completing that step, go to Lysandre Cafe in Lumiose City – you might remember it as the place where you caught Beldum during the main story. Good news: everything’s working now, so you can get there directly without using any teleporters.

Go directly to the red elevator and choose floor B3. When you arrive, enter the room and wait for the characters to start talking.

How to Catch Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you’re not automatically successful when catching Mewtwo unless you use a Master Ball. However, if you fail the battle, it simply restarts, so you’ll always have another chance.

Once you reach B3F of Lysandre Labs, go near the blue screen and a cutscene will begin. When prompted, activate the locks to make Mewtwo appear.

After Mewtwo appears, it won’t immediately battle you, and you can’t throw Pokéballs at it yet. Slowly walk towards Mewtwo to start the fight. Then, keep throwing Pokéballs until it breaks free. Finally, you’ll need to battle and defeat Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is level 70, but shouldn’t be too difficult to defeat if you’ve finished the main game, especially if you have Dark-type Pokémon or moves.

After you defeat Mewtwo, send out one last Pokémon to try and catch it. If you’re unsuccessful, Mable will say something, and then the battle will restart, letting you try again.
