No Man’s Sky Dev Responds to Once Human Reportedly Stealing Assets

The creator of No Man’s Sky has reacted to claims that the game Once Human used assets from their game within a pay-to-open loot box system, responding with a lighthearted, “They’re the ones being played.”

I can’t believe No Man’s Sky came out way back in 2016 and is still getting huge updates! Just recently, they added a ton of cool stuff like better ship building and the ability to salvage parts from space wrecks. But then I heard about Once Human, a newer game from 2024, and it turns out people are saying they basically stole assets from No Man’s Sky. The founder of Once Human has actually responded to those accusations, which is pretty wild.

No Man’s Sky Founder Says ‘Jokes on Them’ in Response to Once Human Allegedly Ripping Off Assets

A user on the No Man’s Sky subreddit noticed that the game Once Human appears to be using assets from No Man’s Sky. Specifically, a cosmetic item called “Sky King” in Once Human closely resembles the Teleport Module from No Man’s Sky. While the Teleport Module is earned through normal gameplay in No Man’s Sky, the similar item in Once Human is only available as a rare reward in a paid loot box, as reported by GamesRadar+.

A cosmetic item in Once Human looks extremely similar to NMS’s Base Teleport Module — and it’s being sold as a high-tier lootbox reward. Is this acceptable?

Hello Games founder Sean Murray noticed a post online and replied on X (formerly Twitter). He jokingly said, “Looks like we forgot to simplify those rivets!” and included a picture of the item in question. He was referring to ‘Level of Detail’ (LOD), a common technique in game development where objects further away from the player are shown in less detail to improve performance.

jokes on them – we forgot to LOD those rivets 😅
