As a big fan of Cyberpunk 2077, I just saw that CD Projekt Red has confirmed there won’t be a big fifth-anniversary update this month. One of the developers wanted to get ahead of things and let us know before the game’s anniversary on December 10th, so we wouldn’t be let down if we were expecting one. It’s good they’re being upfront about it!
The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020 was a major failure. The game was full of bugs and ran terribly on older consoles, making it almost unplayable. However, there was a promising role-playing game hidden underneath all the issues, and CD Projekt RED has been working for years to fix it and make it the game they originally envisioned. Cyberpunk 2077‘s reputation has since improved, and fans were excited about the game’s fifth anniversary on December 10th. The studio hinted at something new coming this month, leading many to believe a fresh update was on the way – a reasonable assumption, given that CD Projekt RED has continued to release substantial updates throughout 2025.
Cyberpunk 2077 Isn’t Getting a Fifth Anniversary Update After All
Marcin Momot, the Global Community Director at CD Projekt RED, recently posted on X to address rumors about a new Cyberpunk 2077 update. He stated that the team doesn’t plan to release an update in December, making it clear that players shouldn’t expect new content on December 10th. While the developers may still acknowledge the game’s fifth anniversary on that day, it won’t be with an update – they might instead celebrate the game’s progress and achievements over the past five years.
Although some players will be let down by this announcement, it’s a smart move for the developers to clarify things now, before excitement gets too high. CD Projekt RED’s initial announcement was vague, so it’s understandable fans started hoping for new content. However, building up those expectations only to disappoint people on December 10th would be avoidable, especially considering the positive reception Cyberpunk 2077 has received after its initial problems.
After Momot hinted at something, fans playfully suggested it might just mean a new update is coming in January. While that seems improbable, it’s not impossible – especially considering Cyberpunk 2077, which was repeatedly declared “finished” before receiving what was called its final update. It’s possible there’s another major update still in the works, but one thing is certain: it won’t be released on December 10th.
While Virtuos assisted with recent updates to Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED has a full plate with its future projects. The studio is currently developing both Cyberpunk 2 and a new Witcher game (likely The Witcher 4) at the same time, with the Witcher title expected to release first. However, development on both games is still in its early stages, so players shouldn’t anticipate a new release from CD Projekt RED anytime soon. The developers are determined to avoid the rocky launch of the original Cyberpunk 2077 and are willing to take the necessary time to ensure Cyberpunk 2 is polished and ready. Although fans are eager for new games, a delayed but well-made launch is far preferable to a broken one, especially considering the potential of the Cyberpunk universe.
