EXCLUSIVE – Eidos Montreal Was Working on a Legacy of Kain Reboot Before Embracer Buyout

Resumes from former Eidos Montreal employees show the studio was developing a dark fantasy action RPG with a focus on melee combat and parkour, intending to reboot a well-known vampire franchise. Online speculation has been rampant, but TopMob has confirmed this project was a Legacy of Kain reboot, and it was cancelled several years ago. It’s important to note that these cancelled projects are from the past and unrelated to the recent layoffs.

After Embracer Group bought the studio, the project was cancelled. The project was known internally as P16, simply because it was the sixteenth game Eidos Montreal had begun developing.

Originally pitched to TopMob as a fresh start for the ‘Legacy of Kain’ series, the game was cancelled after about a year of work when Embracer Group shut it down and returned the rights to Crystal Dynamics. It’s unclear if Crystal Dynamics has made any further plans with the ‘Legacy of Kain’ franchise since then.

According to sources, the project was progressing smoothly and had basic gameplay functionality after about a year of work.

The cancellation of P17 is part of a larger trend at Eidos Montreal, where numerous projects—possibly 7 or 8—have been scrapped recently. It appears the studio is now primarily focused on providing support for other companies’ games, like Grounded 2 and Fable. I’m told developers were also approached about working on Kojima’s Overdose, but the opportunity was declined because it would have required some team members to relocate to Japan.

Eidos Montreal is currently developing a large-scale internal project that began around 2019. It’s received hundreds of millions of dollars in funding, but insiders believe it won’t likely earn back its costs. However, the company has already invested so much that cancelling the project isn’t an option.

It’s uncertain what the long-term impact will be for Eidos Montreal, but recent layoffs, including earlier ones this year, suggest the studio may be facing a difficult future.
