In Octopath Traveler 0, you’ll return to the world of Osterra, but centuries before the events of the first game. A time of widespread corruption and conflict threatens to tear society apart, and a new hero must emerge to confront the dangerous Ring Holders and prevent total chaos.
While much of Octopath Traveler Zero is meant to be discovered through gameplay, this guide offers a helpful introduction to the core mechanics and provides some tips to help you enjoy a smoother adventure.
Break Mechanic, And Enemy Special Moves
When you first start playing the Octopath games, it’s helpful to know they work a lot like the Bravely Default series. The key is to exploit enemy weaknesses and break their defenses. This will either stop their attacks or make them much more vulnerable for a short time.
As a player, I’ve learned that every enemy has a weakness, and paying attention to when their shield drops is super important! Bosses are really tough, and they get even harder the longer a fight goes on. Plus, they charge up special attacks for a full turn. If you don’t break their shield before that turn ends, they’ll unleash a devastating attack on your whole team – so timing is everything!
Success in Octopath Traveler II‘s battles depends on knowing when to strike. As you advance through the story and conquer tougher challenges, enemies will become even more formidable. Defeating them won’t just be about timing your attacks – you’ll need to learn how to break through their defenses.
A Weapon For Every Occasion: Weaknesses & Team Comp
In this game, every character – both the main player and their companions – uses two weapons to attack. Like many other JRPGs, players need to strategically choose which weapons to use against each enemy, switching between them during combat using directional buttons. This choice, alongside magic, skills, and special actions, is a key part of the battle system.
Every enemy has a weakness, whether it’s to a specific type of element or weapon. Some are easier to defeat with Swords, others with Spears, and some with Staffs. If an enemy is weak to a certain attack, their defenses will break down with each hit. An enemy can even have multiple weaknesses! You can spot these weaknesses by looking at the small squares under the enemy’s health bar – if you see at least one, it means they’re vulnerable to a particular type of damage.
Boost & Ultimate Moves

During battles, characters earn Boost Points (BP) each round. Pressing the ‘R’ button when you have BP activates a powerful enhanced state, making your skills and attacks stronger. You can store up to five BP. Using a skill at maximum BP turns it into an Ultimate Move, dealing extra damage and making enemies more susceptible to attacks – especially if the regular version of that skill already weakens them.
Stronger basic attacks become available as you invest Battle Points (BP) during a turn, increasing both their damage and how many times they hit. As you play through the story, you’ll unlock different, more powerful moves, but we won’t spoil those! Mastering the timing of these boosted attacks and skills is key to winning battles.
Equipment & Know Your Stats/Skills

In Octopath Traveler 0, a character’s stats directly impact how they perform in battle – affecting their attacks, defense, and overall actions. Because characters can fight as either a Vanguard or a Rearguard, understanding how each stat and skill works is crucial.
During battles, characters placed in the Vanguard will automatically use all of their active abilities and some of their passive ones. Characters assigned to the Rearguard will regain health and skill points, and may also earn bonus points based on their equipped passive skills. You can switch characters between the Vanguard and Rearguard at any time during a fight.
Having well-rounded equipment – including a helmet, armor, weapons, and accessories – will boost the stats that matter most for your character class. Mages should focus on increasing their SP and physical and magical resistance. Some classes benefit from a mix of HP, speed, and defense, prioritizing survivability over raw damage. However, classes like the Hunter excel by maximizing critical hit chance, attack power, and speed.
Picking A Job, Mastery & Desire
This new Octopath Traveler game offers more character customization than previous entries. Before choosing a character’s main job, players can select things like a starting skill, a favorite food, and three belongings. These choices influence how the story begins, and after completing the initial quest, players will make even more key decisions that shape their experience.
I’m really excited about how they’re letting you customize your character! You get to choose a Job – like in other Octopath games, there’s the Scholar, Thief, Warrior, Hunter, Dancer, Cleric, Apothecary, and Merchant – and a Mastery Skill, which sounds like it’ll give you a nice boost in battles. But it doesn’t stop there! You also pick a Desire – Power, Riches, or Fame – which sets you on a starting path. The cool thing is, you’re not stuck with your initial choice for either Desire or Job. You can totally change your Desire later, and you’ll be able to switch between Jobs with your main character, which sounds awesome for experimenting and building different characters!
