Big expansions for popular online games like Destiny 2 always generate a lot of excitement. With that excitement comes high expectations, which means there’s a real risk of disappointment if the launch doesn’t go well.
Unfortunately, the recent significant decline in player activity appears to be affecting Renegades, Bungie‘s newest Star Wars-inspired expansion. It’s definitely generating discussion, but not the positive kind the developers intended.
The Galactic Update Sets An Unwanted Record

As a long-time Destiny 2 player, I was really surprised to see how few people jumped into the new expansion, Renegades, at launch. According to SteamDB, it actually had the lowest player count of any Destiny 2 release ever – it’s pretty shocking, honestly!
So, the new expansion was kinda weirdly Star Wars themed, and honestly, I was hoping it would bring a ton of new players to the game. But it peaked at only around 71,278 people playing at the same time, which was a bit of a letdown.
Right now, the number of players online is concerningly low, around 40,000. This suggests that even the new content hasn’t been enough to keep players engaged. You can see the current player count below:
Destiny 2: Renegades had the worst performance of any Destiny game to date, with fewer players online at its peak than even the previously lowest-performing expansion, Episode Heresy, which reached 77,399 concurrent players.
The current player numbers are even more concerning when you look at how well previous big expansions did. For example, when Lightfall launched, over 316,750 people were playing at the same time. Shadowkeep peaked at 214,100 players, which was considered a bit low even then.
The number of players online at the same time is still concerningly low, currently around 40,000.
In addition to disappointing performance results, the new Destiny 2 expansion has received a very mixed reaction from players, based on reviews on Steam.
The latest update is dividing players. Some love the new story and weapons, while others feel it’s only for Star Wars fans. If you’re interested, Renegades is out now on PC and consoles, so you can decide for yourself.
