Octopath Traveler 0 is a fantastic game for anyone looking to enjoy a classic Japanese role-playing game (JRPG). It offers eight different character classes, called Jobs, and you can recruit many characters to join your team. Because there are so many options, players often wonder which class is best to start with.
This guide helps you understand the strengths of each character class and ranks them into three tiers—S, A, and B—to help you pick the best one for your main character. Choosing wisely will be important for a difficult adventure across Osterra, so consider your preferred playstyle and how the class fits with your team.
S Tier Starting Jobs for Main Character in Octopath Traveler 0
Warrior
- Strong Points: Easy To Master, Resilient, Deals Tons Of Damage
- Best Class Combo: Cleric, Thief
For new players, the Warrior is the best starting class, especially if you choose the Twin Shot Mastery skill when creating your character. It’s a well-rounded class that can easily switch between being a durable tank, a strong physical damage dealer, and a counterattacker.
For new players, a powerful warrior class is a great choice. They can deal a lot of damage quickly and gain an early advantage. Also, at the start of the game, many enemies are especially vulnerable to the damage types this class uses – swords and spears – making it even more effective.
Cleric
- Strong Points: Heals Party Early, Sustain, Snowballs Into A Powerhouse
- Best Class Combo: Warrior, Apothecary
Overall, the Cleric is the strongest support character in Octopath Traveler 0. They’re incredibly helpful early in the game, as healers are rare companions at the beginning. As the story progresses, the Cleric proves to be essential, keeping the party alive through even the toughest battles.
As a fan, I’ve found this class works incredibly well alongside Apothecary or Warrior. If you pair it with Apothecary, you get even more healing, which is amazing. But if you go with Warrior, it seriously boosts your ability to stay alive, letting you switch between fighting on the front lines and playing defensively without constantly getting taken out. It’s a really flexible combo!
Scholar
- Strong Points: Best Elemental Damage Dealer, Strong At All Game Stages
- Best Class Combo: Apothecary, Cleric, Merchant
In the Octopath Traveler series, the Scholar is a magic-using character (Job) that can be challenging to master. While not strong as a front-line attacker, the Scholar excels when positioned in the back row. There, its fire, ice, and lightning spells become incredibly powerful when its Boost gauge is full.
Players often create their main characters as scholars who also make potions, but clerics, merchants, and even warriors—especially those focused on spellcasting—can be very effective too.
A Tier Starting Jobs
Merchant
- Strong Points: Raises JP For All Party, Easy To Level Up, Great Support
- Best Class Combo: Thief, Dancer
As a new player, I’m really loving the Merchant class! It’s been a lifesaver with getting gold – I’m finding way more from items. Plus, buying all the gear and supplies I need isn’t as painful on my wallet. It even helps me get better deals when talking to people in towns, and hiring extra help is cheaper too. It’s definitely making the early game much smoother for me!
Combining this class with the Thief job creates a fast-paced support character with powerful abilities, effectively making them a durable, dodge-focused tank. It’s a solid choice, and you can further enhance it with additional support skills from the Dancer job.
Apothecary
- Strong Points: Excellent Support, Good Alternate Healer
- Best Class Combo: Cleric, Scholar
The Apothecary is the second-best healing class, offering slightly better stamina management than the Cleric, though it doesn’t heal quite as much overall. This class excels at keeping the party alive, and having a well-developed Apothecary will be a huge help as you progress through the game.
Combining this class with a Cleric creates an incredibly powerful healing duo. Alternatively, choosing Scholar as your job will give you a playstyle similar to a Red Mage.
B Tier Starting Jobs
Thief
- Strong Points: Fast, Critical Based, Deals Decent Physical Damage
- Best Class Combo: Warrior, Dancer
The Thief is a powerful and agile class, skilled in both daggers and swords. While it’s a solid choice, finding characters who can also use daggers is usually pretty easy early in the game. This means a Thief as your main character doesn’t offer a huge advantage to the rest of your team.
While it won’t drastically change the game’s difficulty, having Celsus or Stia as companions is usually sufficient for the beginning of the game. The Thief class is most effective as a main character when paired with other classes like the Dancer, Warrior, or Apothecary.
Hunter
- Strong Points: Range Physical Attacker, Great Speed
- Best Class Combo: Thief, Warrior
Starting with the Hunter job isn’t ideal. Players will likely switch to Phenn quickly, and the Hunter’s main benefit is just to access early Bow, Axe, or Wind-based damage.
However, if players are determined to use this character, pairing it with Thief can boost speed, critical hit chance, and evasion. Alternatively, Warrior is a solid pick, allowing you to equip all four main types of physical weapons on a single character.
Dancer
- Strong Points: Good Support, Hard To Master, But Comes Out Strong In Late Game
- Best Class Combo: Thief, Apothecary
Dancer is a challenging class to learn, demanding precise adjustments and a lot of equipment that’s difficult to find. This equipment is typically held by powerful characters that you won’t be able to fight early in the game.
The Dancer class isn’t as strong as others at the beginning of the game, and its attacks aren’t as powerful as those of the Scholar or Thief. However, once leveled up and equipped well, a Dancer can be a huge asset to the team, thanks to its amazing buffs and elemental attacks.
