Final Fantasy 14 Reveals Surprising Reason for Lifting Glamour Restrictions

Players of Final Fantasy 14 are excited about a new update coming in Patch 7.4, and surprisingly, a recently disabled player-made modification helped inspire it. Though users of the mod were disappointed when Square Enix shut it down, the upcoming changes should address some of the features they enjoyed.

So, early in 2025, Square Enix suddenly hit the Final Fantasy 14 mod, Mare Synchronos, with a cease and desist. It was a total shock to the community! The mod had been around for years without any issues, and honestly, it had become a huge part of how a lot of us enjoyed the game. Basically, Mare Synchronos let you customize how your character and gear looked – really get into the aesthetic – and then share those custom designs with other mod users. It was super popular, so when it suddenly disappeared, everyone was pretty bummed.

Mare Synchronos Is Gone, But It’s Having an Impact on Final Fantasy 14 Now

Final Fantasy 14’s upcoming Patch 7.4 will significantly overhaul the game’s glamour system, removing most current restrictions. Game director Yoshi-P recently explained to Famitsu that the team is making this long-requested change, in part due to player feedback after the removal of the Mare Synchronos glamour, and a better understanding of why players enjoyed using it. Players have been asking for these improvements for years.

Last August, a popular Final Fantasy 14 mod called Mare Synchronos was unexpectedly shut down after receiving a legal request from Square Enix. The mod had a large community – over 200,000 users on its Discord server – so the decision was significant and unpopular. Mare Synchronos let players customize their characters beyond the game’s original limits, and it also removed restrictions from the game’s glamour system. The glamour system normally allows players to change how their equipment looks while keeping its stats, but it limits what gear can be used based on class and level. Mare Synchronos bypassed those limitations.

With Patch 7.4, the game will remove restrictions on glamour, letting players customize their appearance with gear from any class or level. After discussing modifications (mods) with players, specifically how much they enjoyed tools like Mare, the developers decided to address the underlying reason people used them: the desire for customization. Unlocking the glamour system was seen as a way to give players more freedom and reduce the need for unofficial modifications, and the positive feedback encouraged them to implement the change swiftly.

Yoshi-P didn’t make this change for just one reason. He personally prefers games, including Final Fantasy 14, to have some limitations on character appearance to stay true to the Final Fantasy style. Specifically, requiring players to use class-specific gear helped them look like the traditional jobs and classes seen throughout the series. He admitted that most modern MMORPGs offer much more freedom with gear choices. Ultimately, he decided to balance his own vision with what players wanted, and removed the restriction. The development team was actually surprised when he announced the decision.

Although the recent updates to how glamour works only affect gear appearances and not character models themselves, many players see it as a positive change. Players of Final Fantasy 14 have often pointed out that the game shows its age, having been around for 15 years. However, the game’s director, Yoshi-P, has hinted at bigger changes coming, suggesting Final Fantasy 14 could essentially be rebuilt in the future. The team aims to completely re-evaluate the game to help it evolve. While it’s impossible to satisfy everyone, these changes could revitalize Final Fantasy 14 and bring back players who have stopped playing.
