Star Citizen Has Now Raised Over $900 Million

Okay, so Star Citizen just keeps raking in the cash! It’s blown past $900 million from people like me who backed it a long time ago. But honestly, even with all that money, we’re still waiting for the full game to actually come out. It’s still in alpha, which is basically a super-early version, and while the developers, Cloud Imperium Games, say a 1.0 launch is planned, a lot of us fans are starting to wonder if it will ever actually happen. It’s exciting, but also a little frustrating, you know?

I’ve been following Star Citizen for ages – it’s incredible to think development actually started back in 2010, even before Chris Roberts officially founded Cloud Imperium Games in 2012! Chris, of course, is famous for the Wing Commander series, which I loved growing up. When Star Citizen was first announced in 2012, it instantly grabbed my attention with its huge scope and promise. We’ve been able to play bits and pieces since 2013, and it’s been in early access since 2017, with constant updates. But honestly, with how much funding they’ve received, a lot of us fans are starting to wonder when we’ll finally see the full 1.0 version released!

Star Citizen Has Raised $900 Million In Funding

Star Citizen originally gained funding through a Kickstarter campaign, bringing in over $2 million from fans. Now, the game is funded through purchases players make within the game, with some items, like the ‘Ultimate Explorer Pack,’ costing over $1,000. Despite the high prices, Star Citizen has now reached a total of $900 million in crowdfunding, according to Entertainment Niche. In 2025 alone, the game has earned over $120 million, making it a remarkably successful year for its developer, Cloud Imperium Games. However, as the game nears the $1 billion mark in funding, many fans are frustrated by the lack of a release date after more than ten years in development.

One possible reason for delays is Cloud Imperium Games’ single-player game, Squadron 42. While Star Citizen is a large, online sci-fi game, Squadron 42 is designed as a separate, story-driven experience. The studio hopes to release it in 2026, but like Star Citizen, it’s been in development for over ten years and has faced numerous setbacks. The game boasts an impressive cast of Hollywood stars, including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, Andy Serkis, Henry Cavill, Damson Idris, and many others.

Star Citizen is an incredibly ambitious game, aiming to combine many massive features into one experience. It envisions a single, vast universe with hundreds of star systems, planets, and moons that players can explore without interruption. With features like space battles, trading, resource gathering, and detailed ship mechanics, Star Citizen is striving to be one of the largest and most comprehensive games ever created, which explains why it’s been in development for over ten years.

Despite years of excitement, fans are starting to get frustrated and wonder what’s happening with the massive amount of money raised for Star Citizen. The game’s repeated delays and costly in-game purchases, which many consider unfair, have made it one of the most talked-about – and debated – games ever.

If Star Citizen continues its current fundraising pace, it’s predicted to reach $1 billion in crowdfunding within the next year. This would put it in a rare category, as currently only one other game comes close in terms of development cost: Grand Theft Auto 5, which cost around $265 million. Recent reports indicate that Grand Theft Auto 6 has already exceeded $1 billion in development costs. If confirmed, Grand Theft Auto 6 and Star Citizen would be the only two games ever made with budgets of that size. Interestingly, both of these highly anticipated games are also facing delays. Grand Theft Auto 6 was recently pushed back again, now expected to release on November 19, 2026.
