Battlefield 6 is continuing to evolve as a live-service game. Although the initial release of Season 1 received criticism regarding things like cosmetic items, the RedSec system, battle pass progression, and changes to game modes, the upcoming Winter Offensive update on December 9th aims to fix many of these issues. This update, also known as version 1.1.3.0, includes improvements to Breakthrough and Rush modes with adjustments to objectives and vehicles, and begins to address problems with tanks in RedSec. The update also focuses on making prone enemies easier to see, improving weapon recoil and accuracy, and enhancing the game’s network performance. However, despite these positive changes, Battlefield 6 still hasn’t addressed concerns about the size of the game’s maps.
Battlefield 6’s Map Size Remains a Point of Contention
Since the initial test version of Battlefield 6 was released, many players have discussed how chaotic and confined the maps feel. While some enjoy this more intimate style, comparing it favorably to classic maps like Operation Metro and Grand Bazaar, a large number of players believe that huge, open maps are essential to what makes Battlefield unique. Maps like Caspian Border, Sinai Desert, and El Alamein are examples of this, and only Mirak Valley in Battlefield 6 offers a similar scale – most of the other maps are much smaller.

The first season’s launch sparked more debate, with many players criticizing the new Blackwell Oilfields map for feeling too similar to existing maps in BF6. While players who enjoy close-quarters combat are happy, those who prefer vehicles or longer-range gameplay feel left out. Long-time Battlefield fans are upset by the trend of fast-paced maps, believing the game is prioritizing players who used to play Call of Duty instead of rewarding loyal Battlefield veterans. This has led to significant criticism of Battlefield Studios, as Battlefield fans strongly dislike content that feels like it belongs in Call of Duty.
The map in Battlefield RedSec received praise, but some players wished it had been included in the main Battlefield game rather than being limited to the battle royale mode.
Image via EA BF Studios has acknowledged the community’s desire for larger maps, including naval ones, which have been noticeably absent. While they’ve stated map size is being considered, and that future maps will offer variety while maintaining ‘constant action,’ this hasn’t reassured many fans. Players appreciated the changes made with the Eastwood map and hope to see significantly larger maps added over the next few seasons to create more balanced gameplay. They also want existing maps to be expanded. It’s unclear if these requests will be met, but Battlefield Studios needs to provide an update on their map size review soon. Otherwise, players who prefer larger maps may switch to other games, or revisit popular titles like Battlefield 1.
Battlefield 6 Season 2 Has to Address the Elephant in the Room (and Hopefully With Some Elephant-Sized Maps)
It’s possible that the next Battlefield game will continue to focus on smaller, action-packed maps, only including a few large maps to satisfy players who prefer that style. This approach has been successful so far, given the game’s strong sales, so the developers might not prioritize the requests of a smaller group of vocal fans. However, they really need to communicate their plans. They previously mentioned they were looking into map sizes weeks ago and didn’t share any updates with the community, so it’s important they clarify their position with the upcoming Season 2 announcement. Whether they plan to stick with smaller maps or change direction, fans deserve to know what’s happening to keep them engaged.
Ideally, we could release one large new map each season, along with a smaller map, and a revamped version of an existing launch map made significantly bigger.
If the next Battlefield game focuses on smaller maps, it would be best to be upfront about that. Letting players who prefer large maps know they might see some occasionally would be a good way to manage expectations and show respect for their preferences. Also, Battlefield Portal could be expanded to let players customize maps themselves. Giving them complete control over map size and allowing more terrain editing would empower large map fans to create the experiences they want.
Ideally, alongside the Portal features, the next Battlefield 6 update could include one large new map each season, plus a smaller map, and a revamped version of an existing launch map made significantly bigger. If they follow this plan, the game should have plenty of large maps within a year. Hopefully, this is what the developers are planning. At the very least, players need official information about map sizes soon, as the current update, 1.1.3.0, hasn’t addressed the issue.
