Paid DLC can be fantastic value, but nothing beats getting new content for free in your games. Some games are free to start but make money through small purchases and expansions, while others require an initial purchase and then offer paid expansions. Thankfully, some games stand out by providing years of free updates and content to players who’ve already bought the game.
Sometimes, games need to be consistent for everyone playing online, especially in games with ongoing worlds. Other times, the best games that receive free updates are created by developers who truly care about making a great experience for players.
No Man’s Sky
Explore 18 Quintillion Planets Across 255 Galaxies
When No Man’s Sky first came out, it received a lot of criticism. However, the developers, Hello Games, have consistently released free updates over the years, transforming the game into one of the best space exploration experiences available. This impressive turnaround has earned them a lot of praise, particularly because the game is already fantastic, and they still keep adding new content.
While developing their new game, Light No Fire, the team at Hello Games consistently incorporates new technology into No Man’s Sky. This constant innovation keeps No Man’s Sky feeling fresh and modern, as if it were recently released. Updates like the addition of buildable and flyable Corvette ships, a complete overhaul of underwater exploration, and the introduction of large NPC settlements demonstrate just how much the game has evolved. Players who have been with No Man’s Sky since the beginning especially recognize the incredible progress it has made.
Project Zomboid
A Gritty, Realistic Zombie Survival Game That Asks ‘How Will You Die?’
Despite being over ten years old and relatively inexpensive, Project Zomboid continues to receive significant free updates, even though it’s still considered an Early Access title. This challenging zombie survival game doesn’t expect players to last long, but while they do, they’ll manage detailed characters with traits, skills, and both physical and mental wellbeing. The game features deep systems for crafting and stealth, creating a truly immersive and realistic zombie apocalypse experience.
Recent updates to Project Zomboid have added new towns, improved building options (including basements), a visual overhaul, and revamped combat. The game also features new ways to play. Although development can sometimes be slow, especially with players testing a beta version, the game has received a huge amount of free content throughout its history.
Foxhole
Persistent World Wars That Can Last Months
Foxhole is a unique online multiplayer game where players fight in large-scale wars that can last for weeks or months. The game is set in a fictional world inspired by World War I and II, and everything – from bullets and vehicles to supplies – is created and moved by the players themselves. Unlike many other games, there’s no character leveling; when your soldier falls, you just become another soldier in the fight, ensuring everyone starts on equal ground.
To keep the game fair for everyone and ensure balanced battles, we won’t have any microtransactions or paid downloadable content. All updates will be completely free. Throughout the year, we release smaller updates adding things like new buildings, vehicles, improved trench warfare, and map adjustments. But occasionally, we launch major updates that significantly change the game, like when we added naval combat. Our next big update is called Airborne, and it will introduce planes and parachutists, bringing air warfare to the game.
Dwarf Fortress
Help Your Dwarf Colony Survive A Reactive & Deeply Simulated World
Dwarf Fortress is a game with a rich history, originally created with support from player donations and now available on Steam. A free version remains accessible, without any in-game purchases or paid upgrades. The game is continually updated and enhanced, and the Steam version offers excellent value. Developers have stated they plan to continue working on it indefinitely.
Dwarf Fortress is a game where you manage a dwarven civilization and try to build a fortress that will help them thrive. It’s known for being incredibly detailed – everything in the game is randomly created, leading to unique and unpredictable stories of civilizations growing and sometimes collapsing.
Stardew Valley
The Coziest Farming & Life Sim
Let me tell you, since 2016, Stardew Valley has absolutely earned its reputation as the coziest game out there. You inherit your grandfather’s dilapidated farm and get to work bringing it back to life, which is incredibly satisfying. But it’s so much more than just farming. You can wander a charming open world, get to know the townspeople – and even find love! – plus there’s fishing, and you can delve into caves to clear them out. It’s a really relaxing and surprisingly deep experience.
Over the past ten years, the game has been significantly improved with many updates. These updates haven’t just fixed problems, they’ve added a lot of new things to enjoy. For instance, the addition of Ginger Island provided players with a whole new area to explore and new activities, and new farms and seasonal events have also been introduced.
Valheim
A Norse Mythology Survival Game
Valheim is a survival and crafting game inspired by Norse mythology. Players begin in a peaceful area called the Meadows and venture into increasingly challenging lands like the Black Forest. As they explore this huge, randomly generated world, they’ll find new creatures and materials. You can explore on foot or by sea, either alone or with friends, but building a base is essential – the wilderness can be dangerous!
The game has received consistent, free updates and doesn’t include any pay-to-win elements, all while remaining affordably priced. Major updates have significantly expanded the endgame content, introducing new creatures, building options, and even characters with their own stories. When the Deep North update releases, players returning to Valheim after a break will be surprised by the sheer amount of new content, particularly as they venture deeper into the game.
